Brian:  has the house ever had cable?     When we moved into our house in 97 we stood it for one year without cable or television.   In 98 we ordered cable right around Christmas time.   Called Charter and found out that the house we bought was a weekend home and never had cable.   So there was a charge for installing a line to the house.   However, they had a deal where you get free installation if you bought a new $10 plus toy and donate it.     So we did that and got free installation.

I don't know if you could turn on and off cable only when you are here.  They'd probably charge you some kind of connection fee.    Good luck.

Tonight I started signing up online for one of the DISH network promotions, and I got to a screen where it asks for your Social Security Number.  Since they are not Uncle Sam I don't see any reason that I have to give it to them.  If you don't provide this information you have to check the box saying you agree to pay a $50 fee, which sounds like extortion to me.

I tried calling DISH tonight and the person answering the phone was not helpful.  I will try calling again tomorrow during the day when I would be more able to push my issue up the supervisory chain - but before I do so I'm wondering if anyone else has dealt with this issue?

The only reason companies want your SSN is so they can either 1) Check your credit which actually causes your credit score to drop or 2) To mess up your credit if you don't pay a bill.

Just give them the wrong number.  If you're not going to tax me or provide SS benefits, you don't get my real number.

Now that my mobile phone works up here (I now have Sprint), I'm thinking of ditching the land line.   But then I would lose my internet connection.  Does anybody have cable for internet only?  I already have a Dish for TV.

If DISH has quit providing us with those networks now is a good time to quit DISH.

What are our options to do that up here?

Please don't tell me they are zero or none?

GOSH.... THOSE ARE MOST OF THE BEST CHANNELS!!!

This is heck of a way to let their customers know about their business decision!!!

After my initial shrieking it turns out I have DirectTV satellite here and it has not been affected by this.

If my service HAD been affected this way I would be:

CANCELLING MY SERVICE.

If they threatened to apply the penalty for ending the contract early I would threaten them with a class action lawsuit and get as many people together on this as I possibly could.  THEY are the ones that have changed their contractual agreement first.... this should nullify the entire contract.

If they bill your credit card.... CONTEST IT and DON'T BACK DOWN.

I believe that you have the legal right to drop their service since they are not providing what they agreed to.

GOOD LUCK EVERYONE.... I feel so bad for you all!!!      :'(

I was looking at buying DISH network equipment and saw this:

http://www.radioshack.com/product.asp?catalog%5Fname=CTLG&category%5Fname=CTLG%5F003%5F008%5F002%5F000&product%5Fid=16%2D2904

Has anyone bought DISH hardware from Radio Shack?  I wonder if this price includes the "smart cards"?

Have had Direct TV since long before it became known as "Direct" Have a Sony unit with a wireless control that lets me control from anwhere in the house, Have never had a problem with rain or snow. Have checked the signal level during the worst rain and snow and never seen a drop in signal strength. Like Direct's vacation policy that lets you put them on vacation hold during the vacation and not have to pay for that period. Takes them about 15 min. to turn back on when you call. Also it's nice to watch 60 min at 4 PM on sunday and the late night talk shows 3 hours ahead of the locals if you have the East coast Ch package.

If you get Direct at Circuit City, which I did, I paid $250 for two regular boxes and 1 tivo and my satelite, I got $200 back if rebates!!!  so the whole 3 system cost me $50 and I own it!!!

Also with Dish you do not own the equipment, they do and you have to rent it...  There are no contracts with Direct...  Geez, I sound like a Direct saleswoman..  LOL  I'm just happy with it...

You can own or rent with Dish, your choice, there are advantages to both. The discription I gave in my previous post assumes you will own the equipment as I do.

just go to any search engine and type in direct tv, there are always offers for free a dish and free installation, you just have to sign a 1-2 year contract...some give free movie channels and some give free dvd players...

I already have Dish service, and I'm just looking to add a couple of TVs.  The special offers apply to new customers only.  I did get my current satellite dish and one receiver for free through a special offer they had a couple of years ago.
