Any plans for a critter cam where you actually mount a camera on an animal? There was a biologist on Leno tonight who does the Critter Cam for National Geographic. He had some incredible footage from whales, penguins and seals.

This hawk has become a regular visitor to the guzzler during the past few weeks.

The photo was taken late yesterday afternoon. It appears to be a sharp shinned hawk.

Could it also be a Cooper's Hawk? Can't see the bottom of the tail (Coopers has a wide white stripe compared to a sharp shinned). Neat Pics!!!!

Yep, plus in my experience, Coopers have a more reddish breast than the sharp shinned (that is what made me think Coopers) and Coopers are a little bigger than SS Hawks. Hard to say from a pic.... And there is so much genetic variation within species that you can get into some interesting "discussions" It has been MANY years since I was an avid birder. Used to be able to distinquish female sparrows from each other. Boy was THAT a few brain cells ago.....

The consensus is definitely leaning towards the Cooper's but I'm still not 100% convinced.

I did some measuring so we would have a better idea on size. It appears the length from the tip of beak to tip of tail is approximately 12in. (It should be noted that the head is turned and would probably increase the length if the photo was a true side shot)

I'm now convinced that it is an adult Cooper's Hawk.

I contacted an expert in the field and here's what he had to say:

Your bird looks like an adult Cooper's Hawk to me. Without something of known size in the picture it is hard to assess the bird's size, but it looks big. It looks like it is just completing its annual molt, as expected at this time of year, with the central tail feathers not yet finished growing. (in the Cooper's Hawks adults always have yellow eyes)

I mounted one of Mountain Hardware's Wildlife Measuring Sticks next to the guzzler and the Cooper's Hawk decided to stop back by for another morning bath.

By adjusting camera settings I was able to capture some of the quick movements the hawk makes when moving in and out of the guzzler.

Three seems to be a crowd at the guzzler

2 recent raccoon visitors bathed in the guzzler and used every square inch of water. When 3 showed up there was a waiting line.

The coyotes haven't decided to take up bathing yet so 3 of them seem to fit.
