Simple mustard. "Black Mustard" and surprisingly not indiginous to California. Black mustard was introduced from Europe. Most sources credit the Spaniards as introducing mustard to California. The condiment is made from the seeds remaining after the bloom.

I remember when my brother visited me in California for the first time (from Indiana). He LOVED those yellow flowers! I aways think of him when I see them start blooming. Great photos FF Steve!!

I'll remember that when I am weed whacking this week. The Spaniards must have come through my property and drops seeds. They do have a great flower before they die off.

Very nice! Where do you get your "formal" or latin names from? I have a terrible time identifying birds...let alone plants.

Hi Wildman...I'm using a couple of wildflower reference books...and the internet. I've found a couple very good wildflower references on "webshots".

Not the best flower photo, but I am facinated by this plant. My reference, "Flowering Plants", by the Native Plant Society, describes Windmill Pink as growing in weedy and disturbed soils. That's exactly where I found this plant, growing on an old mud slide. Remember the mud slides from two years ago? This plant was very small and I've seen it nowhere else. I was lucky to catch this one when I did. The location is now closed by the Forest Service to protect the breeding grounds of a frog which I believe is the "Forest Frog". I think that's it's name. Please correct me if I'm wrong. I spent some time in the City Creek Drainage during the month of April, before the closure, and got many photos of the frogs as well.
