I was excited to find these plants at the bottom of Lone Pine Canyon Rd....Near the bottom section of the Cal Trans patches...Look for a bluish purple on the shoulders.  They are a treat..

The yuccas are starting to explode into blossoms in Lone Pine Canyon, and the ceanothus are really flowering profusely!

Matilija Poppy, Romneya coulteri
Papaveraceae
I've only found one of these plants in Lone Pine Canyon.  It's in a drainage at the lower portion of the canyon.

Thought so.
Have those in my yard.
Pretty, but invasive. (and they hurt)

What a unique plant.  They are loaded with spines.  I had to shake the one I photgraphed to get all the insects off and was introduced to the sharpness of the spines.

The pedals of the bloom decompose in the position they lay, which is usually just below the bloom, on a spiney portion of the plant.

The bloom of the Spiney Poppy is nearly identical to that of the Matilija Poppy, however, the body is entirely different.

Matilija Poppy, Romneya coulteri
Papaveraceae

Arrangements of native flora are plentiful at the "Huntington Botanical Gardens" , but I found this prize in the parking lot,  with lots of lavender.

Steve,

That is a cool flower, it looks like someone rolled it up in their hands.

Which flower is a lupine that I shot....  I guess I'm going to have to get a book.

Thanks,
Danna

Wow! Angel, How do you do a 5 shot panorama? It's great! BTW, how was Cinco de Mayo at the Avi? (sorry, off topic.)

I ended staying at home as that was the wkd of the prescribed burn.  Didn't feel safe going that far from home.

You take 5 shots and then merge them together.  The software does it..  You just have to not move much when taking them...

Thanks!
