The raven appears to be soaking something in the water to soften it up. I've seen them do this before.  Smart birds.. I put rocks on my dumpster to keep the wind from blowing the lids up.  I've seen them push the rocks off to allow the wind to blow the lids up.  After that they go dumpster diving.

yup, SkierBob I think you're right. The Ravens here (and we do debate as to whether they are ravens or crows).. will take their roadkill or whatever and rinse it off in the horses's water barrels. They then drop the parts they don't want into the bottom of the barrels. Such cute birds. cheryl o7o

some type of garden snake. It's not a gopher snake.

Cheryl you probably have both. I had not really paid attention until we had an unkindness of ravens in WW last fall when they were after pine cone nuts.

I think it's a case of you'll know them when you see them. I had one fly by me at the house one time pretty near and the woosh, woosh of the wings was amazing to hear the air move, no crow flap, flap.

Did you mean "garter snake?"  It looks like it might be a "two striped garter snake."  But what the heck do I know?!  I got a "C" in herpetology and that was over 30 years ago....

definitely a Garter Snake.  I had one as a pet when I was young.  They are great around the garden as they eat unwanted insects, etc.
