We just read the interesting story of Acorn Lodge. Who owns it now? Is there any public access? Any events? Where can I buy a copy of "The House that B Built"? Mary Q

Hi - it is privately owned. The new owners bought it oh... 6-12 months ago? -- from another private owner. It has no public access nor events, although it used to a few owners ago. We were fortunate enough to tour the property when it was for sale, but I don't know any way to see it now. It's very strange and rather wonderful.

I don't know about the book though.

I, for one, would love it, if folks that own historical properties would offer them up for tours. I would happily dole out cash -money just to view some of Wrightwood's historic homes!! The Wright's property by Mill Pond, Acorn Lodge, the house next to the Yankee Peddler..Etc. just to name a few!

I've attended the summer garden tours for several years. A few (don't remember how many) years ago, the Acorn Lodge was included on the tour and we got to check out the grounds, and even a peek inside. Fascinating!

maryq, I'm not sure where you can look at that book - do you live here and are you able to go to the local museum on Saturdays between 10 am - 2 pm? I'm sure they would be able to direct you.

My dear neighbors just sold their Wrightwood place and returned back East and told me the most wonderful story of being married 62 years ago and honeymooning in the tree house at the Acorn Lodge...That's the little wood dwelling hanging over the pool that you can see from Acorn.

I always thought it was some kind of Joke that they called the tree house the "Honeymoon suite.

The Acorn Lodge is located at Acorn & Eagle. I was fortunate enough to befriend Karen, the 2nd to the last owner of the property, about a year before she sold it.

All of the structures on the property are awesome, inside and out.

The pool had been being used as a "pond" of sorts and had tons of huge fish in it.

There is tons of info about the lodge on the above links...it's a wonderful and fastinating place, indeed.

MY NAME IS TERRY GRAHAM AND MY FAMILY LIVED AT AND CARETAKEN ACORN LODGE IN THE EARLY 1960'. SAM SUTHERLAND BOUGHT IT FROM THE SON OF MR. "B" -BRISTOL. THEN THE CHURCH OF THE OPEN DOOR IN LOS ANGELES BOUGHT IT FROM HIM, IT WAS USED FOR CHURCH GROUPS, CHURCH CAMPS AND PASTOR GETAWAYS. LOCAL WRITTEN HISTORY SAID THAT WHEN THE CHURCH BOUGHT IT THEY BURNED ALL THE UNIQUE FURNITURE THAT BRISTOL HAD INSIDE. I DON'T KNOW WHERE THAT INFORMATION CAME FROM. WHEN WE LIVED THERE IN THE 60'S, A LOT OF THE FURNITURE WAS STILL THERE. THERE WERE BED FRAMES MADE OUT OF ROUGH OAK BRANCHES, OAK/YUCCA LAMPSHADES AND TOWEL RACKS IN THE BEDROOMS OF THE MAIN LODGE AND AN OLD TWISTED OAK LAMP STAND AND SMALL OAK BED FRAME IN THE HONEYMOON TREE HOUSE.. SOME PIECES OF ODD&ENDS CHAIRS WERE ON THE FRONT PORCH AND IN THE COLD STORAGE LEAN-TO BEHIND THE KITCHEN. IN THE CORNERS OF THE MAIN LODGE, ADJACENT TO THE GREAT STONE FIREPLACE, GLASS HAD BEEN PUT UP TO PROTECT SMALL PAINTING AND MORALS THAT WERE BEHIND IT. THE FIREPLACE HAD A LARGE SWING-OUT METAL POP THAT WE USED TO COOK IN. WE HAD SUCH A GRAND TIME LIVING THERE. MANY OLD FRIENDS HELPED US RESURFACE THE POOL DECK AND I STILL REMEMBER THE PLAYFUL NOISES OF CAMP GROUPS AS THEY SWAM IN THE DEEP POOR....IT WAS THE VERY SAME POOL THAT I WAS BAPTIZED IN. THE FAMILY HORSES WERE KEPTIN A LARGE CORRAL AT THE CORNER OF EAGLE AND ACORN, WHERE A LARGE HOUSE CURRENTLY SETS. OUR SMALL CABIN HAS LONG BEEN TORN DOWN, IN ITS PLACE SITS THE LARGE WALSH HOUSE. THE LODGE WAS A MARVELOUS PLACE TO LIVE. THE LAST CARETAKERS WERE THE BAILY'S AND THEN DELORES WITT, WHO CURRENTLY LIVES IN A REST HOME IN VICTORVILLE. THE LODGE REMAINED EMPTY FOR QUITE AWHILE. I BELIEVE IT WAS IN THE 70'S THAT CHURCH OF THE OPEN DOOR QUIT USING IT. WE MET OWNER KAREN IN 2002, WHEN SHE WAS TRYING TO SELL THE LODGE. SHE GAVE MY DAUGHTER AND I A TOUR OF THE PLACE, AND EVEN THOUGH SO MUCH HAS CHANGED INSIDE THE MAIN LODGE, IT STILL BROUGHT BACK GOOD MEMORIES. A FEW YEARS AGO WE WERE BLESSED ENOUGH TO MEET THE NEW OWNERS, WHO ARE REALITORS IN SHERMAN OAKS. THEY SEEM LIKE GREAT PEOPLE, AND THEIR GOAL IS TO KEEP ACORN LODGE IN ONE PIECE. TG, WRIGHTWOOD

The book you are asking about, "The House that --B Built" is out of print. There is a copy that you can sit and read in the California Room at the Feldhyem Library in San Bernardino. Their copy does not circulate.

Another source of information about Acorn Lodge, and William Bristol, is a book titled, "The Man Who Built Camp Cajon".
There is a chapter in the book about Acorn Lodge as well as other accomplishments of William Marion Bristol.

The Wrightwood Historical Museum, located in the Old Firehouse on Cedar St., (next door to the pizza parlour) is a good souce for reliable information on the historic Acorn Lodge.

This museum has expanded over the years and houses a lot of interesting displays on different aspects of Wrightwood history. It is open on Saturdays and admission. is free[ A handsome handmade birdhouse on a pedestal was set up to accept donations. Neat place and neat volunteers. They deserve a "drop in the birdhouse."

They've done a lot of work since I toured it 5 years ago or so. It's a great property but a strange layout. I agree that it's well suited to a B&B or retreat center, although I don't know the ins and outs of commercial property up here. When I win the lottery I'll buy it.

We had the chance to swim in the pool a few times last Summer as the owner is the brother of one of our neighbors who invited us over. The pool is awesome.

The property is really unique. The problem is that there is no shower in the main "house". You have to go out to the building in the picture below (which has been turned into a gym and weight room, across the driveway from the main house to access the shower.

Seems like a fair price. It seems to me right now would be a good time to purchase it and probably even negotiate a lower price. I have a feeling the window of opportunity won't be open for too long though... maybe within the next two to three years a serious prospect should invest.
