Verizon's Gregg came out today and helped me get back on line. What a freakin' Nightmare...now I have someone trying to break into my PayPal account.

What makes you think someone is trying to break in to your Paypal account? Because you got one of those e-mails? Those are all phishing attempts. Paypal will ALWAYS address you by name, and not something generic, like "dear Paypal customer"

What makes me "think" this is because I was ON MY PAYPAL account navigating through to pay a bill and the words came up-while on the PayPal sight.

I'm still having major problems with my Verizon DSL and cannot seem to get any help. I did find out that VERIZON screwed up my registry..which is why I can't log onto many American websites, cannot sign up for certain things and my Google home page says  Australia.  I tried to work with a Verizon phone tech, who by the wasy was in India, he told me to call HP which is the maker of my computer. They were no help either as they want money for their tech support. Anyone got any ideas? HELP!!   I'm so ready for another Internet Carrier up here in WW  >:(

I'm having some kind of an issue, since this afternoon.  I don't think it's a Verizon DSL problem, but I can't access anything via Internet Explorer.  It won't even load.  I'm on here now via Mozilla Firefox.  I can't send or receive e-mails either right now (I use Outlook Express, must be connected to IE somehow.  I dunno.)  This started about mid-afternoon.  It's happened before, and it seems to fix itself eventually.  Frustrating, even more so cuz I'm so computer illiterate, and anything other than what I'm used to is a real challenge.

3PinkRoses, I have a friend up here who uses DSL Extreme for her internet access, rather than Verizon, and she is very happy with it.  I don't know anything about it, but it might be something to look into.  And I can't believe that HP wants $ for their tech support!  Dang, I didn't know anyone charged for that.  I've had to call Dell a few times, not many, thank goodness, cuz I usually don't know what I'm talking about and I don't know the proper terms, and they usually can barely speak English.  Plus it seems like you are on the phone forever.   :P

The best way to get viruses and spyware is to use Internet Explorer 7 or older, use Outlook Express, not update your windows and of course not have a firewall.

If you don't believe me believe him....

Well, I shoulda thought of this before I posted my "whine" above, but I turned the computer off and started over, and now it's fine.  I guess I should put a sticky note on my computer that says, "reboot before you whine", or something to that effect.   ;D
I still can't play the word game Text Twist unless I go through MSN - I've always done it on Yahoo before.  This started a couple weeks ago.  I wonder if a system restore back to a month or so ago would fix that, but I don't wanna screw anything else up.  ???  Oh well, if that's all that's wrong, I ain't gonna complain...... ;)

I do have a firewall, and windows updates itself periodically.  I am guilty of using OE, and I don't know how to update IE.

Because most hackers attack this browser because of its commonality.....and every time they put out a new version there have been more holes.  Also 99% of all malicious spyware comes through this browser.

There are many tech reasons Kimmy but  there other things as well...

For example, Internet Explorer 8 is in beta and Firefox already has the updates :

Firefox is updated/upgraded by a collective community that insures the best of all worlds.

Mozilla is the company, however,  it was also the early name of their  first browser and they are at Mozilla.org.  But the browsers that most people use is from them is called Firefox.  They have different versions with different names.  I think the old Mozilla is now seamonkey or something funky.

No, I don't. I'm getting the impression that it would be a good idea, though. I was reading some of the previous posts in this thread and noticed something about Wrightwood Internet access. I didn't know we had it. Does any one know how much it is?

from wikipedia...you got me interested...
For simplicity, the word Mozilla is often used to refer to all Mozilla-based browsers. For example, when it is said that a website is usable by Mozilla browsers, it means that it is usable by Mozilla Suite, Firefox, Camino, Netscape 6, etc. In some older Internet statistics programs, the term "Netscape 5.x" is incorrectly used to refer to these browsers because the user agent string starts with Mozilla/5.0.

So, I take it the most current "Firefox" is what I should use?

Yes, it will say getting started or something to that effect.  And there are add ons so you can customize it.

Kimy, I barely know what I'm talking about, but last year in February I was having some major issues, and Surfer_Dude was kind enough to come over here and fix whatever was wrong, plus he installed Firefox on here.  I only know that it always works when IE doesn't, and I think I should use it most of the time.  I don't know if it's set to update automatically or not - do you remember, SD?  Otherwise, how do you set it to do so?
