RobertW's santa wish list
« on: Oct 15, 06, 10:04:41 AM »
Sources tell me that RobertW added this to his 2006 Santa's wish list.

The Icom IC-R9500 is a new tabletop receiver which will be the premier radio communications receiver in the Icom portfolio.

This dream radio will support P25 digital decoding as well as a whole host of features that professional radio receivers provide. Expect the price for this radio to be close to $10,000, so santa better start saving his money.

Yeah..for an ICOM.

They used to be top of the line radios. But their quality has really fallen off in recent years. I have two old Icoms that are great, but I know lots and lots of hams who won't go near there stuff anymore. They used to have a repair facility in Washington state that was fantastic but they closed it and now the repair turn around is very slow and very expensive. In some cases if it's out of warranty they won't even touch it. Kenwood and Yaseu both make top flight receivers also.

Ya know Bob....since we're willing to spend 10K of your hard earned sheckles for your stocking stuffer, you may as well get one that transmits too. After all, you are getting your license so may as well make use of it. Yaesu has three models in the 10k region and this would be my pick.

Since it has 400 watts out of the box, it's not a bad DX barefoot rig. If you only need 100 watts to excite the Amplifier, they have that model too. This thing is awsume, but I don't think it's 10k better than my 920 with the cascading filter set and the Ameritron 1k. It will also accept studio mics, which is nice for cleaner audio. I use one of these through a Behringer audio EQ before the 920.

So go make us proud and pick up the phone....operators are standing by. ;D

Now, don't toy with RobertW.

Clint has been kind enough to let me use his antenna.  It's a little short and an ugly thing but works very well.  :wink3:

I'd better rephrase that...

Clint has let me use an antenna for my mobile scanner that he no longer uses since it interferred with the 220 mobile antenna on his vehicle.  It doesn't look like any mobile scanner I've seen, is shorter than most tri-band scanner antennas but works very well at pulling in the signals.  There, that sounds much better ;D

As for a 10K receiver, I have no idea who would buy and use such a thing.  Professionals maybe...

Now I remember why I've put off getting my HAM license.  I can't afford the toys.   ;D

Bob,
You should rephrase that also.

When I get my HAM license I can justify more emergency radio equipment.

Speaking of little antenna's.. ::)

A few years ago I made a couple of portable 4 element yagi's intended for direction finding and they work very well. Maybe something we could use or experiment with somtime.

But not near as compact as this Diamond handheld. The more I look at this antenna I think we need a couple in our stocking. And the funny thing is, it would fit. It's tunable from 120-500 Mhz. Gee... how handy is that....Bob.
