I just don't get it. Why are they coming down around people this year? We had plenty of moisture in the high country, therefore, shouldn't it follow there should be plenty of bear fodder out there?

Because there is so much water oozing out everywhere in the high country I am going to venture a guess that they are just looking for food. I think with the huge amount of snow they got in the higher elevations, their food supply was delayed due to the ground being so cold. Case in point is that I am still seeing snow flowers at the higher elevations and most people say that it is pretty late in the summer for them. I hope I get to see one this year as I have been coming up here since the early 70's and have never seen a bear, just the paw prints. Then again I hope it is from a safe distance

I just chased a big bear out of my trash. I could then hear him on Elm tearing up cans.

I was on the balcony yelling at him. At first he came at me, then turned and ran. Maybe my dog barking down at him from the edge scared him. He must have been hungry because a few seconds later I heard him smacking around another can. The last bear broke my latch, so it won't close all the way. I must have good stuff in my trash.

You should call CR &R, They will give you another new can without a broken latch. Smart bears!

It was. But last time the can was too full to close so he took that opportunity to bust the latch.

CR&R's trucks seemed to have broken the latches on both our cans and tweeked the lids so they don't close completely unless I'm trying to open one.

There are the smaller cubs but woe to you if you see one. A very protective mama bear is usually not too far behind.

Before mine got broken by the bear I would stick my finger in the connecting part and it would close. When the truck picks up the trash it locks it open. The bear bent the whole latch forward so it won't go in the hole.

And yes it was my Pugwieler barking his little but off. LOL

This bear looked very skinny. Like a very large skinny dog. It stayed on all fours and never stood up like in the movies. Just a few seconds after it left running I heard a large crash from the corner of Elm and Linnet followed by several loud beating sounds. I knew it was going to work on another can. I was working all night and the people on my conference call could not believe it. Strange nobody else had ever had a bear in their trash.

Couple nights ago we had a bear rumage through our garbage. It was confirmed by a neighbor who received a deposit in his front yard

The National Forest Department of Fish and Game recently issued this bulletin...

"Warning: In light of the rising frequency of human/ bear conflicts, the National Department of Fish and Game is advising hikers, hunters, campers and fishermen to take extra precautions and keep alert of bears while in the field.

We advise outdoorsmen/women to wear noisy little bells on their clothing, so as not to startle bears that aren't expecting them. We also advise outdoorsmen/women to carry pepper spray with them in case of an encounter with a bear.

It is also a good idea to watch out for fresh signs of bear activity. Outdoorsmen/women should recognize the difference between adult bear and young cub bear droppings:

Young cub bear manure is smaller and contains lots of berries and squirrel fur. Adult bear droppings has little bells in it and smells like pepper."
