Saw one, a youngster, a couple of weeks ago around Spruce/Eagle,  in the middle of
the day...going from one trash can to the next.  It wasn't at all concerned that many
humans were watching, talking & giggling!  Just a hungry young one.

Maybe the bears heard about the new CR&R trash cans and realized that now the recyclables are sorted out of the regular trash making their search for food easier.

I live a hop skip and a jump from upper Oriole and I'm concerned about my trash also.  I've always had my trash cans under the stairs and have not had any problems.   But now, the cans are too big to be under the stairs and I have it outside up against the house and I'm concerned that it would attract bears.      I'm with Nolena and have never brought my trash out the night before.   I always dealt with it in the morning.     Too many wandering doggies in my neighborhood and I don't want to clean up a mess after the trash guys leave.
However, CR&R have been really good about picking up loose trash, at least at my house.

Thanks for the warning about the bears.   I seldom let my kids outside to play alone but just remembered that one of the chores of my 8 year old is to crush cans and put them in a bag.   While he is doing this, he remains outside alone.   I'll have to make sure that it's clear before he goes out and stay with him outside.

I've never had a problem with bears in town, but I keep my distance.
Pepper spray was originally invented to repel grizzly bears. I carry that when I hike.
I also have a small device that emits an irritating sound (inaudible to humans) that works well in repelling and quieting dogs. It's called "Dog Off" and is made by Lentek.
When we first moved here in the early 1990s it was a very dry year, and the bears were everywhere. Every trash can left out before trash day was a target. None of them was ever aggressive with a person that I remember, but I do remember a kid carrying his lunch, and a bear relieved him of it.
Our kid has 2 big dogs with her when she's out in the back yard. Usually, you can tell that there's a bear around by the barking dogs. When the barking gets close, be observant.
A young bear also showed up at the sandy end of the Country Club once. Cleared everyone out pretty fast.

FYI

If your going to be doing any late evening fishing at Jackson Lake, please be advised that a good size Bear was spotted along the shoreline on the south side of the lake yesterday (5-25-05) evening.

Was it fishing? (And did it have a license?)

Bear in our neighborhood recently.
Don't leave your trash out the night before pick-up!

But, is it possible to wear clothes, and STILL qualify as a bear?  :eyebrows:

In the B section of today's Daily Press, they attempted to do a story on the Bears in WW.  Too bad when you jump to B7 the last half of the story disappears!  I would have liked to have read the whole story......once again poor page editing by the Daily Press!  >:(

What appears to be the complete article appears in their web site:

Can't you call and make a complaint to editing?  Maybe they can rerun the article.

D'OH!  I was so irritated by that missing half of the article.  The MP used to have that happen as well.

Last year we had a bear on our driveway in mid-morning.  The dog was barking so I sent dd out to shush her and dd came running back in screaming and crying.  She thought it was a cub and that the momma would kill our dog.   Guess that's the last time I send the kid out when the dog is barking hysterically.

Anyway,  the dog partially treed the juvenile so when I called her off the bear just lumbered away.

I suspect the bear has been around again recently.  My dog's been barking every night at something right around 9:30.  She's usually inside, but lately she's been patrolling right at that time.

I guess the neighbor says that one used to regularly climb into the treehouse behind our house and once broke in the door of their house.  Scared the renter considerably!  LOL

Thanks for the heads up Hank..sounds like he is wandering my way.
I am so happy he/she wandered off on it's own. Like you, I would be very leery of calling any authorities.
Can't wait to see the photos!!
