Structure fire on Lone Pine
« on: Mar 27, 07, 11:37:40 AM »
I heard a firetruck close by and I'm listening to the scanner.  Sounds like it's near akapurple's house (Pam) - but it's not her house.  Anyone know about it?  I wish I had a car - I'd go look.

Sounded like a 2nd alarm fire on the scanner.  They are saying Lone Pine and Reedly(?) Road.  A 2 story building.

They have stopped traffic 2 houses west of us and cars are just sitting there right now, if I go outside I can see the fire trucks but no fire just some smoke and you can smell it. We have not heard anything else, and being so close I would think the fire men would tell us to get out if it was a threat, but it is awful windy! Going back outside to check.

There are 6 or seven firetrucks and just now about 4 or 5 of the green trucks pulled up. I went out to ask a guy if we needed to be concernd and he sais " naw they would have told you by now" I hope he is right. People are just sitting on lone pine blocking the firetrucks? I wish they would turn around instead they are all getting out of their cars and walking toward what ever happened?

Two things:

First-The fire sounds like it is confined to the structure alone.  With the staffing on scene...good hydrants in the area, it is unlikely that the fire will spread beyond the structure itself.    Situations like this are always good motivators for homeowners to do their home weed abatement.

Second:  "They are saying Lone Pine and Reedly(?) Road. "

Reference the address and cross of Reedly Road....there is no Reedly Road in Wrightwood.  It shows as a cross on Lone Pine when the number address meets a certain criteria.  Because the computer wants a cross street...it inserts Reedly for Lone Pine Cyn Rd as it's cross.  The cross at Clyde Ranch, for example, is Reedly.  It is a glitch in the Computer Assisted Dispatch System that has been there since it started.  Firefighters go by the number address and the cross is always nice to have.  Folks that work out of Station 101 are used to seeing that (Reedly cross street) on their pagers.

I'd say the closest intersection is Lone Pine and East Canyon.  From talking to Pam, it sounds like it's the 4th or 5th house on the right after passing East Canyon if heading east (heading out of town).  Pam (akapurple) said the firetrucks and forest service trucks are in front of her house.  It's very windy and we just had a lot of that grauble (learned that from Storm - don't know if I spelled it right).  I was going to walk down but I have too much work to do.

Whatever it was it seems to be over :) The cars are going through and the firetrucks are gone from the front of my house. Good lesson to be prepared !!!!

Can anyone give a physical description of the house?  Color(s), size, one-two story, other features?

Sufer Dude I wish I could for you, I just went back out, now cars are stopped again but for the most part the firetrucks are gone. You came to my house for that get together so picture my house from the deck by the big eagle, looking up the street towards town, it looks like 2 or three houses away toward east canyon, I would walk out there but I am sick . That is all I can give you sorry.

I'd also like to know if anyone was home at the time of the fire, if it's a full-time resident, etc.  Maybe some of the looky-loos can fill us in.

I don't usually take Lone Pine Canyon back up to town but I did today because I didn't want to be delayed by the flagging on the 138.

I came up to the scene at around 1:30 and they were letting us go west on Lone Pine but I didn't see too many cars heading down Lone Pine towards the 15.    No sign of fire but there were many engines still there and their lights were still on.

The woman was home with her granddaughter.  They got out safely.  As I was there, she was asking the firefighters to find out what happened to her cat.  The woman's husband was on his way home from work.  Her son and daughter in law, who live in town, came to be with her. My friend, her next door neighbor, was also with her.  It looks pretty burned on the inside, although the outside of the home was mostly intact.

What an incredible response by Wrightwood Fire Captain Felgar and crew. This house could have sustained a great deal more damage.

Thank you for sharing these photos, Wrightwood, and a HUGE thank you to our wonderful fire crew!

Do they have any idea yet what caused this fire?  It looks like a beautiful house - what a shame.  Thank goodness no one was injured.

Looks like a great stop by the 101 Crew.

Events such as this are the reason it is so important to maintain a minimum of five (we currently have four...but normally three assigned) firefighters on duty in Wrightwood.  It takes a minimum of four firefighters to make entry in any hazardous environment per OSHA regs and department policy.  Think of how effective they would have been if the ambulance had been gone to the hospital.
