Awesome, John!

That bird looked like it was posing for you.  And the pics of the slide are amazing.

The last 4 photos posted were taken with a Canon D60 and a 70-200mm lens

Did you zoom that close on the 2nd shot, or did you crop the first one?  Did you use a tripod?  Is the D60 8MP?

I'm curious if the the 200mm got you that close?

Chuck,
The first shot of Heath Creek slide is cropped much smaller. The 2nd shot is also cropped some.

No tripod - hand held.

The D60 is 6.3 MP when shooting in RAW format. When the RAW format is converted to a 8bit Tiff file it's then an 18 meg file.

The 200mm got me closer than what was posted. The 200mm on the D60 is equivalent to a 320mm lens on a 35mm camera.

What is the equivalent of a 200mm on the 20D versus 35mm cameras?

The 20D has a 1.6  Focal length multiplier

1.6 x 200mm = 320mm

Here's a good page that describes digital SLR and 35mm focal length multipliers:

Here's one from today using a 200mm lens and a Canon EOS-1D Mark II.
Shot indoors looking out a picture window about 8 feet from the Acorn Woodpecker.

So what brand of peanut do you use to draw these birds?  Salted or unsalted?   ;D

Beautiful again, John!  You always seem to be able to get these creatures to just sit and pose for you!  Thanx for sharing.

OMG,  these pictures are just awesome.  I love watching the birds and "trying" to identify what kinds they are.  These pictures are not only beautiful, but so helpful with the names of the species.

Does anyone know, do we ever get any chickadees up here?

Thanks again!

Okay, how many pictures did you have to take to get this.  Don't tell me one, please.

Not only is John a terrific photographer, he uses the 'best of the best' that Canon cameras has to offer these days.   Keep 'em coming John, all of us here in Wrightwood fully enjoy your photos.

Here's a few shots of the top of Heath Canyon from yesterday.

Notice the snow board tracks and on the 2nd photo a flock of ravens flying by. There are a lot of birds working the top of the slide area in the past few days.
