Trunk mount on a Corolla huh? Just don't use your 440 very much!

VERY bad idea.

Awe, come on...  Nothing like 35 watts of RF Radiation at 440MHz to the back of my head first thing in the morning.  I suppose I should use the 5 watt setting when transmitting on 440 until I get my lead screen installed in the back window.   ;D

You already know my answer Robert. ROOF MOUNT! Seriously, don't use high power on 440 with a gain antenna mounted on the back deck or trunk. I actually have a slide about this very thing in the new show.
5  watts is okay.

Okay, now time to bring this thread back on topic.

The misses has been studying at least two hours a day and has been getting between 60% to 80% on the online tests.

I wasn't sure your comment was regarding the roof being a better ground plane then the trunk in relation to signal propagation, heating up up the inside of the drivers head, or both.

I've always enjoyed drilling holes in new cars :)

The problem is my Corolla has a Sunroof that slides to the back of the car, leaving very little room for anything to be drilled through the roof (That is the reason the Corollas have the radio antenna positioned where they do at the very back edge of the roof).

Any other ideas besides my trusty Mag Mount I use on the Blazer?

Back on topic...

I wasn't able to take Clint's class and had to do it on my own.

After reading through the books, I marked the questions that I missed or felt I had trouble with.  I'd go over and over those questions on my lunch hour until I got them all right.

I then would take ALL 12 tests online and did so until I could go all the way through ALL 12 tests without missing any questions.  Result?  100% on my exam.

Clint will not only teach you the things you NEED to know to pass the test, but will give you practical use instruction that the books don't give you.  It's that practical use information that I missed out on by not taking Clint's class.

I have taken other classes taught by Clint and will say he has a gift for taking complicated subjects and making them simple and easy to understand.  Clint missed his calling.  He should have been a teacher.

Though not on topic about the next class, this information is good for those taking the next class.

The best alternative would be a glass mount antenna. You need two to three inches between your highest window defroster wire and the window frame, depending on the brand of glass mount. Mount it at the top center of the window. This puts the radiating element above the roof line. Compared to a 1/4 wave drilled in the center of the roof, this will only be down about -0.5 db
I would recommend Larsen, $140. for a VHF/UHF.

Next Ham Radio Class in just 9 days.

Next class is just about full. I still have not heard confirmations from a couple of people.
In working on the new slide show I have been surprised by how much easier the test is now.
Lots of items removed.
We have a couple of people who are going for their upgrade at the test.
If you have studied the book on your own you should still attend my workshop, as you will learn quite
a bit of practicle info that is not in the book.

Does one have to attend the class in order to take the test?

No. But the beneift of class is that you will learn what to do with the license. The book does not teach you how to be a ham just how to pass the test. I don't teach to the test. You will get a huge amount of info that you need.

The test is open to anyone but I need to know how many bodies to plan for to tell the VE team. And what license classes people plan to take.

I agree with Surfer Dude!   Clint has a great teaching style and the class was a lot of fun. Susan was really helpful as well.  So a huge thanks again for all your time and effort!

I hear about 4 people at Wildfire / Disaster Awareness day expressed interest in another class. I already had two interested and six is enough to start a list. So, anyone who is inclined, let me know and we'll start to look for a date.

Hello Clint, my husband and I are interesting in taking the ham class and becoming hams......I got my ham license many years ago, but unfortunately I let it lapse.  If I passed the test now, do you have any idea if I could get my old call sign (KC6NVR) again?  If not, fine, but I was wondering.  Anyway, whatever date the class happens, please put the two of us on the list.

The call has not been reassigned. Did you live in Brea?

So it's possible you could get it through the vanity call program.

And that makes 10

Room for only a few more.

Hi Clint, I already have my license (Technician) but would like to attend your class to learn more about being a HAM radio operator rather than someone who studied the book and passed the test.  We talked about this at the Wrightwood Fire Awareness day last weekend and I look forward to participating in your class.  Saturdays work well for me during the summer month's.
