Reading an old newspaper account how soldiers at the small outpost of Camp Cady, in present day Newberry Springs, escaped being massacred by Mohave Indians, after the Indians found their commanding officer (a lieutenant) walking around and looking for his mount that got spooked and ran off. The lieutenant was on foot and wearing an unregulated neckerchief, who's color subsequently attracted the Indians. One Indian tore it from the officer's neck and rode off peacefully with the other warriors. Before this, and after this, the area around the fort, which once stood between the ancient Mohave Trail and the Spanish Trail, was a hotbed of Indian/outlaw troubles. On May, 17,1859, peace was briefly achieved...all because of one colorful neckerchief.
