Is there a public comment period? I have some major concerns including truck traffic and air quality. I grew up near the cement plant in Riverside and the silica dust from the mining operations caused major health issues.

Additionally, the Environmental Document is currently being circulated for review and public comment. The deadline for public comments on the CEQA document is April 22, 2026 and the public can comment by emailing me at Derek.Newland@lus.sbcounty.gov

As I read the documents, the mining claim is permanent, and the County can't stop it directly.

This is about the mitigation/remediation plan.  If that can be stopped, then there is a chance they can't mine.

The remediation plan runs through the year 2175.

Yes, I read through it last night and saw that they have a vested interest in the mine. However, if it's been a while since there was active mining, it could be considered abandoned. Then they would need entirely new permits. Does anyone know when that mine was last worked? Someone suggested checking with the Wrightwood Historical Society. Anyone have a contact for them? I'll be out of town all day today or I would swing by the museum.

The vested mining rights were approved by the SB County Planning Commission in a hearing on 3/17/2019.  This part of the project is for the required "reclamation" aspect of the mining impact on the surrounding area. As I read it (do correct), the Mitigated Negative Declaration does one address the issues raised by the mining part of this project - it only deals with the reclamation aspects of it. Therefore, the impacts as described are diminimus compared to those of the mining operation and not addressed in the Negative Dec.
You'd have to go back to the Planning Commission docs from 2019 to see the scale of the operation proposed and what mitigations were required by the County.

The last date was 3/7 - not 3/17. Thanks

I note that staff recommended the determination of vested mining rights be denied and recommended a Conditional Use Permit.  The 3/7/19 memo laid out the determinations for approval, denial, or referral to the Supervisors.  The minutes of the meeting would summarize the action taken.

Ok. Here’s the link to the PC meeting notes where vested status was approved.

The CSD does have a meeting tomorrow night at 6:00 but it's not the same meeting where this mining issue will be discussed. I believe the CSD is meeting at the old firehouse. The Wrightwood Fire Safe Council is meeting at the community building at 6:00 p.m. tonight and that's where the information will be reviewed.
