Prices for used refrigerators?

We are getting new refrigerators next week and I'm debating whether I should sell the old ones, or turn them in to Edison for their Energy Star/Recycle program. We are getting new ones for energy savings reasons.

With Edison, I can get $100 each for them. Not sure how much they would go for if I try to sell them. Here's the details:

1. Whirlpool 25 cf working fridge, side by side, ice/water through the door, but the water doesn't come out anymore. White, looks nice, 19 years old.

2. 12 cf fridge with top freezer, working fine but unsure of age - it came with the house. White, fair condition.

Should I just go for the $100 each from Edison and have them hauled away, or should I see if someone in town wants them?

You could try posting them, but its fairly hard to sell used fridges if they're not a real nice model and completely working. We sold ours before we moved into this house cuz it wouldn't fit. It was still working great, had the water/ice, very large capacity, and very clean. It was 7 years old. We were able to get $200 for it, we had been asking $250. It took us over a month to get even one person interested and finally after 2 months a guy from down the hill came up and bought it. So good luck - it was a huge hassle. If it was me, I'd take the $100!

I agree.. if it was me, I'd take the $100. 19 years, is fairly old, and as you said, the water isn't working any more. Besides, SCE will come and get it for you. No hassles.

The whole idea of Edison's program to buy old refrigerators is to get these energy hogs off the electrical grid. New refrigerators are much more energy efficient at doing the same job of keeping food cold. For the betterment of all mankind, let these energy dinosaurs die a dignified death and take advantage of Edison's very generous offer.

If you recycle them with SCE, you get that old energy hog off the grid!
