Jackson Lake Camping?
« on: Aug 08, 08, 02:07:31 AM »
We decided to plan a local camping trip over Labor Day weekend and felt lucky to pick up a cancellation at Jackson Lake campground.  Because we have never camped in the Angeles Forest, we did some research and came across a forum discussing Jackson Lake.   http://hd.highdesert.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=15799&sid=dfd04d74f58d488b1350dc1fd50aaf16

In the forum, one writer says, "In the summer, Jackson Lake is a favorite haunt of gang members playing Gangster Rap on their loud boom boxes while their deadly Pit Bulls run free to menace others..." Another says, "I've camped at Jackson Flats also, but never made the 2 mile hike to the lake. I heard even then that it was somewhere to be avoided."

My question to all you locals and frequent visitors is are these posts an exaggeration.  Or at the very least, do these lovely visitors at least take their music and pets and go home at sundown.  I looked at many pictures of the lake on the web, and I didn't see one suspicious character in sight.

Any advice or insight would be helpful. We do like quiet, and we can handle a few noisy campers in moderation, but these posts make it sound quite dangerous.  We know every weekend of camping is different, but if you are aware of any trends at this campground, please let us know.  We are driving up from Orange County on Friday night and will probably be too late to get into a first-come-first-serve campground.  Thanks! :)

We have fished at Jackson lake many times over the years but never camped at the lake.  It is not 2 miles to the lake from the campground at Jackson lake but I can say that we have camped just a little further up the highway from there and it was really nice.  We camped in many areas in the forest and have not had any of those experiences.

Sorry I can't be of more help.

Hope you have a wonderful time.

I go to the lake all the time, I've been to the campground, I love taking my dogs there and have never had a problem.  Many people fish there, familys picnic there.  Frankly, that High Desert Post regarding the lake and the area are not only untrue, but offensive.  I hope you will camp there and see for yourself, and feel welcomed by our community.   :2thumbsup:

I frequent the lake, you get all kinds of people there. Being Labor Day Weekend, you probably will see some rowdy people on Sunday but they will be the minority. Most of the dogs that go off leash are playing fetch in the water. There are plenty of great people at Jackson Lake and I hope you have fun.

Jackson flat and the Lake Campground are in different locations. The Lake Campground is adjacent to the lake. Jackson Flat is on top of the mountain 1400 feet above the lake. The trail connecting them is a nice hike. It would be worth your time to hike to Jackson Flat and check out the observation deck on the water tank.

As a volunteer with the USFS we make Jackson Lake a regular part of our patrol.  We hit it at least twice a day when patrolling.  I've never seen the type of activity you read about on the High Desert Forum.  It can get a little crowded on holiday weekends but most of the folks are well behaved and just out to have a nice time.  It is a great picnic spot.

Very rarely have I seen dogs running loose without being on a leash.

The fishing is usually pretty good.  Even though the trout don't bite as much during the hot weather, during the summer Jackson is stocked every other week.  The last stocking was a week ago.

As Tomas noted, LAKE Campground is just a few hundred feet East of the lake. On the other hand it is about a 2 mile walk down the mountain from "Jackson Flat" campground which is only open to group camping (that doesn't mean you can't hike on in and enjoy the observation tower mentioned above) and sits up behind the Grassy Hollow Visitor's Center.

Here is a link to a Topo Map of the area:

This is information taken from the Angeles National Forest Summer 2008 Recreation Report:

Jackson Lake: Open 6 am to 10 pm located in the Big Pines Recreation Area. Boating is limited to small hand launch, non-power boats. The area has 8 tables and vault toilets. Water faucet near restrooms is on. Adventure Pass or Golden Passport required. Lake is stocked with trout every other week from approximately May thru October. 16 yrs + are required to display a State Fishing License. You cannot purchase a license anywhere in the Wrightwood or Big Pines Recreation Area. Swimming is not recommended due to the fact that we do not have a lifeguard on duty.

To me, the fee and drive isnt that much.  You may luck out and all will be well though busy.  If not, pack up and come home.  I like camping at the Oak campground where the host is located.

I think you meant "Mountain Oak CG". It is located directly across from the Jackson Lake access road.

Thanks for all of your replies.  We assumed the poster at High Desert was exaggerating and that is why thought we would check with those who really knew.  We were free this morning and thought we would take a nice drive to check out the lake and the area for ourselves.  At the lake, we saw boy scouts, babies, families, dogs (not the least intimidating although one little one was barking at us), young couples, and kids in rubber boats.  Try as we might, we didn't see one gang member.

We checked out the campground and decided it was a little close to the highway for our liking, so we decided to drive up to Table Mountain to check it out.  We were very impressed and have decided to stay there instead.  They still have openings. :)

We did have one distressing moment at the lake.  After spending some time enjoying the scenery, we got in our car and the battery was dead and we had no cell phone reception.  Sure that the gang members (who were obviously hiding behind the trees) had disabled our car, we were petrified to be caught at such a terrifying place.  No seriously, one nice young man drove my husband to a phone to call AAA and before the tow truck got there, two other gentlemen helped us jump start our car so we could make it to Wrightwood to replace the battery, and we got great service there too, I will say.

Except for the battery, it was a very pleasant trip, and we are looking forward to coming back on Labor Day. I think the poster at High Desert maligned your community and obviously doesn't know a gang member from any normal kid who likes to hang out and listen to music.  I am a high school teacher--I should know about kids ;)

See you on Labor Day weekend! :2thumbsup:
