Noob's Corner
« on: Nov 23, 09, 07:05:50 AM »
A place for noobies (new people) to ask what may or not be good questions. ;D
Remember the more people that answer a single question, the better the information.

Question #1,
I would like to buy a lightweight but well built handheld radio, any recommendations?  Are there any Black Friday Deals?

Question #2,
Rigging the vehicle,
Ideas?

Question #3,
The home,
Ideas?

If you are looking for versatility the Kenwood THF6 is probably the best radio out there. It's a tri band HT with 5 watts available on 2m-440-220 and the software if offered free by Kenwood and small enough to fit in shirt pockets.

It's currenlty on sale at AES for $279.99

If you're tight on the budget, the Vertex VX 150 is an excellent well built 2 meter radio that comes with a drop in charger. The last I checked they were going for $99. They list the radio as discontinued but you should be able to still find them.

I usually recommend noobies buy equipment incrementally since you can spend a lot of money fast if you get radios +antennas for handheld, car and home. A good plan is to start with a good handheld. In the car, you can use a mag mount antenna with an adapter for the handheld to improve your range until you decide on a mobile rig, also good for second vehicles. In WW, the handheld should serve well at home with the local repeaters but simplex across town will be problematic, again, you can add an outside antenna with an adapter.

An additional consideration is band you plan to use. Down the hill 2m and 440 are the most common. In WW, 2m and 220 have been the most popular/active; however, WCG is in the process of acquiring its own repeaters and repeater pairs. The 440 machine is up, the 2m pair has been approved so equipment will be coming, and hopefully the 220 pair will be approved in the near future.

That being said, a good handheld that suits all needs in one package is the Kenwood tri-band TH-F6A. Dual bands are usually 2m/440. Diamond makes great antennas and are my favorite, Toolman can help you out with a tribander, we just put one on my truck.

Mobile rig is a harder ticket. There are currently no tri-band radios in the 2m/220/440 flavor in production. Toolman has, and I was able to get used, the Kenwood TM-741 'family', they were offered with two bands built in and an option for another module. Very hard to get now and they haven't lost value. I'll leave discussion on drawbacks of these units to Toolman as we've learned they can be sensitive to heat and bad swr, especially if you chat a lot, however, with a added fan and a good antenna, there should be no problem. Otoh, since it's a discontinued item, parts are becoming scarce as well. Alternatively, a standard mobile 2m/440 rig would perform equally well in the car or in your house.

That's a very common error that new & old hams make.
We've covered it on the KW6WW Sunday night net, a few times.

Yaseu vx-7r
I was told I might have made a mistake...but I got it slightly used with many accessories.
Downside, I have a small 220 output, upside it is a quad-band, extremely small, solid and "submersible."  I will not test the submersible part of it...

Yup, you never know when that might be handy for you or if one of the kids 'borrows' it!

Dude,
You did fine with a knee jurk reaction purchase, it happens to all of us, me including.  With 300 mw on 220 you'll still get into the local repeater and pending the W/W 220 machine you'll get into that fine when we get on air. You won't hit the Condor, Edison, or WALA link with 300 mw. even with a base antenna.
Having said that, 6mtr. operation on an HT is almost hopeless in our location. With 100 watts and a base antenna I can hit two 6 mtr. repeaters. The only reason I have it is when the band opens up for DX contacts becasue the radio is all mode and I use USB for that.

As far as VHF-UHV goes, you'll be fine. Remember, forget the programming software and learn how to use the radio on the fly. Knowing your radio and how to use it will be your friend when you need it the most under stress.

I don't use programming software just for that reason.  ;)

I'm looking at getting a VX-6R to use in my car and on trails. I spend quite a bit of time near water so a submersable radio gives me a lot of peice of mind. I have a VX-170 and am very happy with that 2m radio. They use the same speaker mics so I won't have to start from scratch. My wife just got her csce and I'm encouraging her to get the THF6.

I've been trying to learn about this world pretty quickly. Thankfully, the local Hams are very happy to help and we have some very knowledgable locals. I have played with a few different set ups. Thanks to John, Clint, and Lin. I will quote Clint in saying "Antenna is everything." A quality antenna makes a huge difference.

I've been buying equipment peice by piece and was pleasantly surprised when I was able to hit the Table Mountain Repeater from Lucerne Valley last night. I had my 5 watt HT connected to my mobile antenna and was able to hear John very well.
