A couple of months ago a guy named Arturo was putting flyers on doors, advertising a tree trimming service. Did anyone use him? We've tried calling a couple of local guys and have never gotten a return call or a visit from either of them. I've heard that Arturo does a decent job but I have no way of contacting him. We just need to trim back a very big oak tree on the side of the house. Thanks a lot if anyone has any info!!

I'm glad this thread came up again as I've been meaning to post our (we think) good experience this year. We have 8 large pines that we wanted cleaned up and advice on our new property as to the rest. I knew I wanted an arborist for our first go around because if someone topped our pines I wouldn't have been responsible for myself and Toolman would've been a single parent while I cooled my heels for 20 to life.   ;D  Seriously, one thing that just makes me livid is topped trees - if you don't want a 60ft tree, don't plant one!!! Anyway, we got them as a recommendation from the neighbors and wound up going with them.

We used TipTop Arborists. It's a family business, you can find out about them at their website (as well as instruction on tree pruning, and how to select an arborist):
Tip Top Arborists
http://www.tiptoparborists.com/index.html

Jim Lewandowski is the owner and came out himself for a free estimate. (I called another arborist and they wanted something well over $100 (I can't find the email) PLUS travel time/expense PER HOUR). Jim worked up an estimate that seemed probably inline with an arborist service after a few back and forth emails we decided what to do, he was not short with his time for a 'homeowner' account. He was also not pushy about work 'he thought we should do' like some people are, he said he would be happy to do whatever we wanted done. The single thing he did feel strongly about (and so I gave it extra weight) was that the several small cypress trees that we had did not belong in WW and that they and their borers would only be trouble whether we wanted him to take them out or not, up to us. Since most all of them had been topped for some reason or other before our time, we did wind up cutting down some ourselves and had them do a couple (cheap) plus stump grind the whole works.

The estimate is all-inclusive, no hidden fees, and did not change upon completion of work. We liked the crew fine. There was one guy in the cherry picker and three on the ground, took two days for all of our trees, plus we had them take out two juniper hedges (plus stump grind). The crew was very nice, very helpful and professional, and I must say, left the grounds cleaner than when they came, including blowing off the roof.

Good luck whomever you decide!

Dan Day did end up doing our trees--charged a fair price and showed up and cleaned up when they said they would.  He and his brother work together--they are regular lumberjacks--and very nice young men.  I was happy to have been able to give them our business, and wouldn't hesitate to do so again.

Edison came out a couple of years ago and topped one of our trees that was right next to the wires. Now the tree is dead. Does anyone know if Edison is responsible for removing it?

Thanks

Yikes! My neighbors have bark beetles killing their trees.  One tree went from green to 95% brown from the beginning of October to now.  The 2nd tree is now 1/3 brown in 3 weeks. The yard was disrupted by a septic tank installation this summer. Edison is cutting down only the mostly dead one today. The said they will be back in a couple of weeks for the 2nd one.   I'm really worried about the delay, since the beetles have been so active. I called Edison and they will look into checking the tree sooner.

Today while talking to the crew I noticed the very top couple of feet of my closest tree is starting to turn brown.  I've been deep watering it and my other trees since I found out about the neighbor' trees, but it is the one closest to the new septic tank

Does any one know a tree trimmer with a really tall lift that could take off the top of the tree to try to save it? I'm hoping with the extra water and the cooler weather that it might have a chance. I had someone in town trim my trees a couple of years ago.  They climbed the tree with spikes and caused a large amount of damage to trees! So I definitely don't want anyone to climb it again.

You might want to consult an arborist first because if it is a pine tree, topping may well kill it anyway.

When you mention the septic tank install, was it just that or a removal and then reinstall? I could see where a new install might damage some roots but not the other way so much.

Do bark beetles really kill a tree that quickly? Unless you've seen evidence of the beetles when they cut the first tree down, I'm wondering if the trees weren't somehow poisoned if a tank was taken out and then replaced??? If that's the case, maybe your tree still has a chance if you keep leaching the soil.

We had our whole lot trimmed by Tip Top Arborists. They are out of Lancaster and V V area and have a good rep in WW. Ask for Jim, he is in the area often and gives free quotes/diagnosis (another place we called wanted to charge hourly AND travel time!!!).

Keep us all posted, ok?

It was a replacement of a septic tank.  The old tank was actually under part of the house and had to be removed and replaced by a new one in a better location.  That all happened in July.  The trees are right outside my bedroom window and I didn't even notice the first one turning brown.  The 2nd one just had a couple of affected branches when I first looked in mid October.  I should have taken a series of pictures because almost daily, the browning increased.  I peeled off the bark of one of the branches of the tree they were cutting down today, the inner bark was completely consumed by the bark beetles.  I would say no doubt the bark beetles took advantage of stressed trees and quickly ate them up in the warm October weather. Fortunately, the edison crew was really good about cleaning up and shredding as they worked.

Any opinions about topping my newly effected tree? Anybody tried it to save a tree? I would definitely consult an arborist (thanks for the referral  :)).  I have seen many trees in the forest have tops break off and survived.  Most of the really old ones seem to have damaged tops.

It's my understanding (from an expert), that when at tree starts to actually show visible signs of true bark beetle infestation (browning, dull light green), it's often too late to save the tree.

However, it's not always a given that its a bark beetle problem when a tree browns, so I wouldn't give up yet.

I need someone to remove some rather large limbs overhanging our cabin and clean up some others as well.  Suggestions please!  Would like to use locals if possible.

Thanks,

Try Michaels' Tree Service 909 591 9700.  He is not "local", out of Chino,  but comes to Wrightwood often and knows what he is doing.

I called Michael's Tree Service about 2 weeks ago and asked him to trim the trees that were next door and overhanging my roof a lot.  They asked if it was a big job and I told them "no" and I haven't heard from them since.  Lesson learned.

Ditto that. You can see my post above. Btw, unlike some arborists, estimate is FREE. I called one guy back when we had this done and he wanted a fee PLUS travel expenses!!!
