I asked the roofer if he could put some nest material in the spot with the wood and he grabbed a bunch of twigs and built them a nice house.  I wondered if they would nest in something that he had touched.

With the exception of vultures, birds have very underdeveloped olofactory lobes in their brains, which means they have little to no sense of smell.  If a baby falls out of the nest, you can put it back without worry that the "smell" of a person will keep the parents from feeding the young.

Also--in answer to the original question--it depends.  Typical birdhouses attract secondary cavity nesters.  A primary cavity nester is like a woodpecker that creates the cavity, then nests in it.  A bluebird is a secondary cavity nester that will nest in a naturally created cavity or a cavity created by a primary cavity nester the year or years before.  If the birds that nest in your eaves will also nest in cavities, they may move to the birdhouse.  If they are not a cavity nester but nest typically in trees, etc. it is quite possible you will have two sets of bird nests...

Thanks for the info!  I didn't realize why different birds used different types of places for their nests.

The builder of this house left spaces above the front windows where the stucco is supposed to meet the wood above so the birds were building nests up there and making a mess of the front windows.  Lacking a better solution I stuffed chicken wire into the open spaces and now there is only one nest at the end where I must have left a space.

I never did put up birdhouses but my daughter made one and after it is painted we will see what we get!

There is a nest right outside my window, in an evergreen, there were 4 baby blue jays and on the day they fledged, two got caught up inside our fence. Our cat almost got them, then our daughter got down to grab the cat and one baby blue jay jumped right on top or her back and flew off!!!! It was so fun capturing this with photos.

Thanks so much for the birdy pics everyone, and the last of the 'teenagers' was an especially nice treat after reading the Lennox story.

I love the shot with the bird on daughter's back.    The caption under it should read something like 'Attack Birds of Wrightwood' or 'I SAID more peanuts'!!
