Well Nolena, I fee your pain.  Here in New Mexico I've been babying 6 fruit trees along for 5 years with augmented soil, watering--following all the restrictions, etc.  But I lost my Pippin apple and one of my bing cherries because the gophers ate all the roots.  My granny smith is barely making it and I just saw a lot of activity near my dwarf peach.  GRRRR.  I think because of the drought, the trees that I am watering are practically the only thing to eat.  But DANG, just as I was about to get fruit.....

I'm tellin' ya true here.. plant them in chicken wire baskets.. the small hole ones.. even if you double them up..  leave lots of nice room for the tree or bush to grow in there.. once the tree has spread out in that hole.. and its roots spread out.. you do not need to worry about what the gophers might eat. Course, I being somewhat violent I guess. .. would simply knock them off their socks anyway. Since I never see them.. that is not likely. cheryl o7o
