Abandoned Boy Scout Camp??
« on: Oct 26, 13, 01:22:10 PM »
I have heard about an old boy scout camp somewhere below MTHigh North maybe as far down as Pinion Hills that has been abandoned since the 1920s. Does anyone know anything about this?

It was called Camp Jubilee, accessed from Mountain Rd. in Pinon Hills. It is private property from what I have heard. Looking at the Google map, I think I can tell where it is and it may be used a private residence/ranch.

My son camped at Jubilee in the 70s/80s. You used to be able to see the flags from the 138 not all that long ago. I don't know one up by Big Pines. I'm pretty sure the access for Jubilee was off the 138. cheryl o7o

Hi Sarah, The old abandoned Boy Scout Camp that you are talking about is in Mescal Canyon just north of Jackson Lake on the Big Pines Highway.  Drive down Mescal Canyon about half a mile to where Cedar Canyon and Mescal Canyon meet.  There is an old dirt road which is now a trail that heads east about a 1/4 mile and leads to the old scout camp.  Once there you will discover several foundations and old rock walls.  Not much else to see there except for the rock ruins.

I was at Scout camp Jubilee last year and it does not date to the 1920's and is currently not in use but, it is not abandoned either.  There is a care taker on the property and some minor upkeep and maintenance is still on going at the camp.

I am sure that you are looking for the Boy Scout Camp in Mescal Canyon at the Junction of Cedar Canyon.

I was told by an old-timer that the ruins in Cedar Canyon across from Arch picnic area were a girl scout camp, not boy scout.  That is a very nice hike BTW.  We sometimes do a car drop on the dirt road down the canyon and hike down.

So we went and found it not really anything left to see though. Then we headed down to the Hagenbaugh Ranch which was really neat and there was a care taker there who gave us a whole tour. I have a bunch of pics but I cant figure out how to post them on here.

The cost of solitude in Southern California? $2.2M.  I really wonder what brought people to attempt to build in places like this, and why their ranches ultimately failed.

Hi Sarah, Can you please clarify which camp you found, was it the old Boy Scout Camp in Mescal Canyon at the intersection of Cedar Canyon or the old abandoned foundations at the top of Cedar Canyon?  The old foundations at the headwaters of Cedar Canyon actually date back to the 1920's but were part of the Los Angeles Big Pines Camp.  The ruins and old foundations across the street from Appletree Campground appear to be more recent and the organizational camp was closed due to a land slide.

Well I have been to the ones across from Appletree campground before and the ones behind the picnic area with the bridge the only thing we found that may be the boyscout camp down Mescal Canyon was about half mile to a mile down the dirt road, right side of the road there is another small road that leads down to a creek bed and along that road there was one wall thing that might of used to be a building. Is that it? too many foundations laying around its confusing lol

The old boy scout camp is located near the  Terresita Pines Lions Camp swimming pool. Just East of there, along the Mescal Creek by an old fire road.

There are no buildings left there, just some foundations. It was gone by the late 1960s when I first hiked by there, and I heard that it was washed out by a flood, possibly in the 1950s.

The camp across from Appletree was know as "Camp Metaka" and was some type of Girl Scout camp, Bluebird/Camp Fire Girls camp.  Across from Arch campground was known as Camp Centenilia. Both of those locals also sport some concrete foundations.

Your Friend,
Bill Lussenheide

Is it possible that camp was Junipero Serra? It starts with a J like Jubilee. I attended camp there in the late 60's and I am looking for information about it.

Camp Metaka was still on the map in the big pines station some years ago.  Went there several times for camp fire girls. Great memories that will always be important to me. Still love walking the grounds and can place where things were from the remnants.

Check the map

John, I'm pretty sure that Camp Jubilee was on the 138 here in Pinon Hills. My son used to camp there when he was a Scout. I don't know if it's used anymore. It did have a care taker. cheryl o7o

Many thanks for Stephen Griley for sending this:

Pictured is my Grandfather Longin Carl Griley.
He donated 90 acres of his 100 acres of land to the Boy Scouts of America, and "founded" the JUBILEE SCOUT RANCH.
