I do not burn candles.
I've seen too many house fires and bad burns resulting from candles.
Also, candles with flames aggravate asthma.
I use electric candles that simulate flickering candles. They look great and eliminate the risk.
Candles with flames aren't worth the risk.

When my dad was a kid (b.1927) they put candles on the Christmas tree in Deadwood,SD. . . I don't know if it was a Scandinavian thing or common practice.

When I was a kid, painted light bulbs were used and they got HOT! 

Before electricity and string light bulbs, lit candles was the only way to go but usually the tree was put up the night before Christmas.

When I was a kid.. the tree was put up on Christmas Eve too.. and taken down rather quickly after that... this was in Buffalo. I swore I would never have an artificial tree. But, I do now. The real trees just dry out to quickly regardless of how much you keep them watered. Besides, artificial trees are like solar energy.. they pay for themselves rather quickly.

I generally do not use candles here. The smell of burning cat fur is just too annoying.

But, there is an old tradition in my family. .. if you burn a Bayberry candle on Christmas Eve it must burn down by sunset. Then you will have good luck throughout the year. Mom and I would set it up in the bathroom sink just to make sure it didn't cause a fire from a straying cat.

I can tell you the tradition about sardines and a $1 bill  on New Year's Eve if desired. cheryl o7o

At midnight. on New Year's Eve.. you sit on a dollar bill and eat a sardine. For some reason .. folks keep thinking they should sit on a sardine. Sooo, Noooo. Besides.. rather ewwww.  You sit on a dollar bill at midnight and eat a sardine.. and it will bring you money in the new year. You know.. we all bet on the snow pool.. so why not? good luck, cheryl o7o
