Also, since this happened in Long Beach, isn't it possible that it was UIA's upstream provider's equipment and not UIA's equipment?
It's fun to try to figure this out.  I don't work for UIA so I'm reading between the lines a lot.

I don't think UIA has an upstream provider in the normal sense.  I think they have equipment at One Wilshire in downtown L.A., which is a major hub -- lots of people have equipment there, and one can "peer" with other networks.

I think they have circuits from here to downtown LA, or from here to Ontario and there to downtown.  Those circuits are provided by some telecom company.

"Long Beach" tells us that the telecom company probably had capacity in Long Beach so they routed UIA's circuits through there, even though it's farther

Yeah, I understand and I know we all have been there ourselves.   Its called "Murphy's Law".
Ultimately, the accountants are at fault.  Redundancy costs money, and in the data center example at least two (possibly all three) telecom companies found they could buy "condo-fiber" at a significant discount over the cost of trenching and installing their own.

It isnt the accountants fault.   Its ours....we want things on the cheap.   With the cut fibers debacles in SF AND ELSEWHERE, maybe trenching isnt the answer after all.   Someday it will be all "wireless".

Going back to lwt42's previous post in this thread - there is a term "backhoe fade" because of the frequency of this problem.

A friend of mine and his late wife designed the first project that put people together in two remote locations. That was in 1977. One location was at Ames in Mountain View. The other at the Goddard Space Center in Maryland which was the location of the first NASA offices. Two groups of dancers  - one in CA the other in MD - were to dance. As you can guess.. the delay made it tricky. Fortunately, they'd done a practice the day before the performance. On the day of the performance, a farmer was working with his backhoe. The super- secret, unmarked NASA cable was dug up. Fortunately, they had the tape of the rehearsal and could cobble together a demonstration video.

RACE Communications is laying cable for Internet service to PH and Phelan. Should we start a new topic on that? I'm very interested and would like to know experiences from neighbors/guinea pigs before I make the switch. And, yes.. we remember the 'backhoe fade' when one of their sub-contractors dug up a cable.

Gearing up for our 2nd drill crew right now.
My estimate is drilling in September. Once we start drilling it will take about 3 weeks.

We keep meaning to call UIA directly, but always remember at the wrong time. Does anyone know what happens when the 2-year contract is up . . . does it become month-to-month, and what is the rate?

Month to month, and the rate goes up a bit.  But check with UIA.

Permit is ready for Cardinal. We will start in March of 2020 - takes about 2 weeks.
It is getting to be winter up here and tricky to drill between warm and freezing weather.

We are currently working on Cardinal. Should be complete in 3 weeks. I know this is important for the folks that live in that small section. Currently there is neither UIA nor Spectrum in that area, DSL only.

Hi All

Anybody know if the "UIA" isolation situation has been resolved yet?

TIA
