After reading some of the not very well thoughout comments being made about the people who did not evacuate, I had to write this response.

It is sad to believe that anyone could protect your home from crime better than you in the town of Wrightwood.  Judging by the slow response times and overall lack of a law enforcement presence here, you are but left to protect yourselves here.  The police have mostly been hanging out near the Grizzly and on the main strip next to all of the coffee shops in town.  Besides that, I have seen them driving up and down highway 2.  That is really it.  They are not doing any meaningful patrols of the town.  It is up to good neighbors such as myself that did not leave to look over your houses.  You cannot attack us (the people that did not evacuate) when we are looking out for you.

As for the garden hose comment, I think most people understand that they will not stop the fire with one.  Just because people stayed does not mean that they were ever going to rely on garden hoses.  Instead, they figured that everyone else left for naught.  Though it got scary as helicopter hill burned, some people kept the faith.  The fire-line held over at Pacific Crest.  The position of those that did not evacuate has been vindicated.

Some people on this forum have gone as far to say that those who stayed only got in the way of the Police, Fire, and Medical personnel.  This could not be a bigger lie.  Those who stayed have offered their own assistance.  The gas station stayed open to provide fuel and other supplies.  Also, the Jensen's Market stayed open to make them sandwiches.  Even the cafes stayed open to make them coffee.  Were it not for those people staying, the first responders would not have these comforts.

I will say this too.  The police have acted with a bit of a chip on their shoulders as well.  Some old men hanging out at the gas station after it closed the other day told me a story.  They said that the police came around and told them to leave the area because they didn't want any problems.  Sad.  I would certainly have shown greater respect to my elders than that.  Also, the police tried to shut down The Brewery on it's first night open.  They told people to leave.  Yet, the people proudly held their ground and stayed.  Please do not misconstrue this as an assault on those who put their lives on the line every time they put that uniform on.  This is simply a critique of how they mishandled a few situations.  Beyond that, they have not really gotten in the way of those who stayed behind.

So in closing, I say that I do not regret staying here with my family.  We are all safe and well.  The air is cleaner up here than down the hill.  I have not had to sleep in any parking lots or pay large hotel fees.  My heart goes out though for those who have.  May your own personal recovery be swift from this disaster.  Surely a fundraiser must be made to help those who need it.

Yours Truly,

Sarajevo

Just to confirm, the red outline around what is labled the "Sharp Fire" is NOT a heat perimeter?

BTW the time stamp in the maps is Boise Idaho time (2327) so it's one hour ahead.

Day 4 begins. We're not out of the woods yet - but I feel a measure of relief.  When I retrieve my pictures and re-hang them -  I'm thinking about saving a spot for a framed copy of my Fire Fee receipt.  Onward. cheryl o7o

What bothers me is every time ABC 7 is doing a story live in Wrightwood the headline reads, "Wrightwood residents refuse to evacuate."

I left the Sharp Fire heat perimeter on the map for reference only.

I'm surprised by the map showing the fire burned south over the town of Lytle Creek. Last coverage I saw it looked like they stopped it at the north side of the RV park. You'd figure the news would be covering if it had burned through Lytle Creek.

Nice that you criticize the police. It's the "in thing" to do lately. So how much crime have you personally stopped by staying up there?

Any rumors you hear would be purely speculation. Look at the IR map where the most intense heat is at Gobblers Knob near  the top of Lone Pine Canyon (along the PCT).

Has anybody heard any info on when the evac orders will be removed and or 138 / 2 reopened

The maps are showing the outside perimeter of the fire (footprint) and does not mean all areas inside have burned.

Sarajevo,
Sorry you feel miserable but you truly don't have a clue as to what was going on. Over the last 3 days LACSD sent 400 Deputies to an unfamiliar town with no maps to mutual aid SBCSD. They had a tactical plan, which, I don't feel the need to explain that to you because I'm sure you wouldn't understand, but it worked.  The LACSD mutual aid response is complete for this event. They won't be back tonight.
BTW, 3 looters were arrested last night.

MODIS and VIIRS infrared sensor satellite fire detections across the northwestern front of the fire as of the satellite pass at 11:30pm PDT Thursday, August 18, 2016.  The only new infrared satellite detections as of this morning (within the 12 to 24 hours prior to 09:15am PDT Friday, August 19, 2016) are located in the Gobbler's Knob area, approximately 2 miles southeast of Wrightwood.  The red line is the "heat perimeter" dated 10:27pm PDT Thursday, August 18, 2016.

Sorry, but I don't expect anybody other than trained police officers to protect my property while I'm evacuated.  It's all just stuff and you can't enjoy it if you're dead.  That's what insurance is for anyway.

My main concern, however, is that if a large portion of the population stays and waits for there to be imminent danger, then there is only one way out of town and that's Highway 2.  We've all seen what the traffic is like during ski season up Highway 2.  Imagine if the whole town waited and then tried to evacuate at once with any kind of required urgency.  Surely several lives would be lost just because they couldn't get out fast enough.

I do appreciate the people at the coffee shop and the grocery store taking care of our firefighters but I don't think the majority of the people who stayed are providing that same service.

Anyway, thanks for keeping the conversation respectful.  :)

Just a thought on Sarajevo's comment about paying 'hotel fees.'  I would check with my insurance co. to see if that was covered in my homeowner's policy.

I see that there is still a hot spot along Hwy 2 so why cant we use Largo Vista/N4?  Those of us who worked last Tuesday are being treated unfairly.  Either we ALL get out or we ALL get back in!

Do you know why they won't be back tonight? Seems odd, if the evacuation orders are still in place.
