Weather says cooler temps on Sun-Wed (so, increased winds out of the west and southwest), then more Santa Anas on 9/27. Forecasts are sketchy that far out due to lower air travel (Google that), but not good news if the current statement is containment by end of October. If they don't have the man/womanpower, this might be ugly. So, pray for rain, I guess. Pretty sad.

Hard to discard the time I spent on local and national fires...I do have a bias. You are correct when you say the fire fighting efforts are being overwhelmed...by both number of fires burning throughout the West and by the ferocious and fast moving fires. When fires grow and double in size within hours...the best you can do is hope folks listen to the evacuation orders. Couple that with the new reality of folks recreating in the forest who have no common sense or just don't care ( or are using fire as a statement to "get back at the man") There are simply finite resources of boots on the ground...aircraft/bulldozers/hot shot crews/ engines and supporting services available and most of those resources have been in place all fire season (which in CA is year round). No different then when we pulled up on a multi-injury traffic accident, Forests and communities are using Triage to use the limited tools available to them in the places where they do the most good. There are more fires then resources like we would like to see them on "our fire". There is no magic bullet when weather, unburned fuels, and topography conspire to make large growth fires the new norm. When the values at risk are the places where we fished or camped or have a family cabin, the stakes are even higher. Right now, on two separate forests, the wild places I hiked and camped and fished for wild trout are being devoured. There will soon be no places for the remaining pockets of wild trout remaining to survive the fire and ensuing mud slides and habitat destruction. Short answer is things are pretty serious right now and I seen no immediate change in that. We are sharing limited resources with communities that have lost twenty people and counting and hundreds of homes. I do know that we have remarkable men and women who really do care, using their knowledge to apply what resources we can share with other areas to stop the progress when they can do it with reasonable assurance that firefighters will finish the end of their shift each day. It's a helluva balancing act.

Oh man, that doesn't look good. I thought I heard they had a bunch of defensible space, but when I saw pics on the news tonight it really didn't look like it at all. Hope they can save it.

I just hung up from a friend in Juniper Hills. He could see flames earlier before dark but not now. They laid a lot of retardant down today. And, the Station Fire burned through a lot of that area.
