Angeles Crest Hwy (SR2)

The section from north of Mount Wilson Red Box Road to south of Upper Big Tujunga should open by Memorial Day weekend.

The section from Islip Saddle to Vincent Gulch will remain closed at least through summer. That section is closed every winter due to hazardous road conditions, so work was stopped and will resume after Memorial Day weekend.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Lower Section of Angeles Crest Highway is Open

Angeles National Forest- The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) announces the section of State Route 2 (Angeles Crest Highway, SR-2) between Mt. Wilson Red Box Road and Upper Big Tujunga Canyon Road in Angeles National Forest is now open to the public.

The section of SR-2 from Mt. Wilson Red Box Road to Upper Big Tujunga Canyon Road had been closed since March of 2023 to repair extensive storm damage. Repairs included scaling the slopes to remove loose rocks and material; disposal of the slide debris; reconstructing a slope drapery protection system; repairing the washed-out slope with geogrid; replacing drainage; and repairing the washed-out roadway.

This section of highway will close again in August for several days for final road work.

Angeles Crest Highway is now open from I-210 to Islip Saddle.

The section of SR-2 from Islip Saddle (post mile 64.1) Grassy Hollow (post mile 77.3) has been closed for since November of 2022 due to storm damage. Two damaged segments within this closure have been repaired. Repairs for the remaining two segments include rebuilding damaged slopes and roadway; replacing drainage; installing erosion control; replacing guardrail; and constructing two retaining walls. This section of SR-2 is expected to be closed for repairs into November.

Caltrans appreciates the patience and cooperation of the public as we continue to repair Angeles Crest Highway and make it safe and accessible to the public. Go to https://twitter.com/CaltransDist7 for updates.

D7-State-Route-2-Emergency-Highway-Repairs

https://dot.ca.gov/caltrans-near-me/district-7/district-7-projects/d7-state-route-2-emergency-highway-repairs

Location

State Route 2 (SR-2 / Angeles Crest Highway) in Los Angeles County in Angeles National Forest.
The Project

There were multiple emergency projects to repair damage to the highway and its slopes and embankments.
Background

Relentless storms from the winter of 2022/2023 caused excessive damage to SR-2 that includes sections of collapsed roadway, slope failure, rockslides, drainage, and a damaged elevated cable-mesh drapery system that was replaced. Construction of two retaining walls was required.

Benefits

The areas of reconstruction will be reinforced and stabilized with the intent to prevent future highway, slope and embankment failures in the same locations and maintain a safe travel route.
Parameters

SR-2 was closed from east of Mount Wilson Red Box Road to just west of Upper Big Tujunga Canyon Road starting in March of 2023. It reopened to the public the morning of Friday, July 5, 2024.  SR-2 is now open from I-210 to Islip Saddle (postmile 64.1).

SR-2 remains closed from Islip Saddle to Vincent Gulch to complete construction of a retaining wall and the roadway at postmile 65.3. That section is expected to remain closed until the end of 2024, possibly longer with winter storms coming.

In September of 2024, a wildfire known as the Bridge Fire caused extensive damage to Angeles National Forest and the section of SR-2 between postmiles 75.3 and 82.26 (the Los Angeles/San Bernardino County line). An Emergency Director’s Order was approved to repair damaged guardrail and slopes, install erosion control, repair damaged drainage systems, and remove hazardous trees.

As a result of both repair zones, SR-2 is closed in both directions from Islip Saddle (postmile 64.1) to Big Pines Highway (postmile 79.9). This section will remain closed until spring once winter storms create hazardous road conditions. The fire damaged section from Vincent Gulch to Big Pines Highway will probably remain closed through summer of 2025.

Q: Why is it taking so long to repair?

A: Members of the Caltrans (District 7) Geotechnical Division had to review damaged sections of highway in person and through drone aerial video to assess damage that continued to change and increase every time it rained. The Design Division must create plans to repair every section of damage and for the construction of new retaining walls. The Environmental Division had to secure permits from state and federal agencies.

Reparation of slopes and embankments is a slow and dangerous process that includes rock scalers and heavy equipment traversing steep inclines.  Repairs on the lower section continued during the rainy season. Every time it rains, the soil must dry for up to three days before work that involves excavators, bulldozers, compactors, and spider excavators can safely resume.  The section between Islip Saddle and Vincent Gulch was closed to construction for the winter of 2023/2024 due to hazardous road conditions.

You may expect SR-2 to remain closed from Islip Saddle to Big Pines at least through the winter.

Bridge Fire Repairs:

Crews have mostly completed removing burned trees. They continue to clean drainage pipes, hydroseed, place rock slope protection and install new guardrail.

Repairs from the storms of winter of 2023/2024:
Continuing construction of soldier pile walls and road reconstruction at post miles 65.3 & 66.3

Caltrans Reopens More Than 10 Miles of Angeles Crest Highway (SR2)
For Immediate Release
Caltrans Reopens More Than 10 Miles of Angeles Crest Highway

Angeles National Forest — Angeles Crest Highway (State Route 2/SR-2) is now open to the public in both directions between Interstate 210 and State Route 138. Caltrans has reopened more than 10 miles of Angeles Crest Highway in the Angeles National Forest after the completion of emergency repairs, reestablishing access for visitors.

Relentless storms from the 2022/2023 winter season caused extensive damage, prompting the closure of Angeles Crest Highway between Islip Saddle (post mile 64.1) and Vincent Gulch (post mile 74.7). Runoff and slides from severe storms created large washouts and undermined the roadway at postmiles 65.29 and 66.34 and created a series of small erosion gullies at postmile 65.80, leaving the guardrail system without support from the side slopes.

The areas of reconstruction were reinforced and stabilized to prevent future highway, slope, and embankment failures in the same locations and to provide a safe travel route. Repairs included rebuilding slopes, constructing two new retaining walls, replacing a damaged elevated cable-mesh drapery system and installing new guardrail and drainage. Total cost of repairs is approximately $7.9 million.

I think this took longer than it did for them to install the new bridge.  What an embarrassment.

Have you watched any of the videos? They essentially built a viaduct (aka bridge).
