Before I had my current car I had a 1990 Jeep Cherokee.  It ran great, no problems, was great in the snow, and it also had plenty of horsepower to get up to Wrightwood from the valley.  If you get a SUV with a small motor, it won't do well coming up Lone Pine or 138.  They made the Cherokee up until 2000.  That's just my take on it.

WWPT Your correct on all counts. My last car was a 4 cyl. stickshift. I got 42 m.p.g. and 293,000 miles before the top end gave out. Also it had the factory starter, alternator and water pump. The only bad thing was that it was underpowered and boy did folks glare at me coming up Lone Pine :-\

The irony of this statement is that no doubt Hill Okie was driving within the speed limit.  The glare should fall upon the law BREAKERS who go at Mach I.

Personal Preferance, I like the mileage of my Honda (36+). But I keep an old Toyota 4X4 to get out when the snow gets deep. Insurance is cheap (second car) registration is cheap (older vehicle) and I don't care if I bend or scratch it a little.

I love my Hummer H3. At about $40k, it is a great deal! I have taken it through snow, ice, and running water. Did I say I love it? J/K

Maybe the top is white to match the graying hairs of those who can afford it.  ;D

Nice Interior

Its got a standard power outlet like in the new tacomas. I love that power outlet in our truck!

Cool colors but dont like the white roof

Titanium Metallic with Dark Charcoal interior

Black Diamond with Dark Charcoal interior

Sun Fusion with Dark Charcoal interior

Black Cherry Pearl with Dark Charcoal interior

Voodoo Blue with Dark Charcoal interior

They start at $21,710

You could get almost 2 of them for the price of a H3 and and they will last alot longer 2  ;D

Yeah, at $21,00 it is affordable but with the price of gas the Prius and snow chains at the same price is also good.

After filling up with todays prices, I was wondering if Yugo came in AWD version? I know you can get one with a rear window de-froster....That's to keep your hands warm while you're pushing it. ;D

Start at $21,710?  that is not too bad for a Toyota.  How many does it seat?

It looks as if they might be going for that old "land-cruiser" feel.  I loved my 2 toyota pick-ups.  I had almost 300,000 miles on my '89 that I sold a couple of years ago.

That's exactly the reason for the white top.  If you look at the front of this new FJ, it recalls the original 60's and early 70's Toyota Land Cruisers, before they went upmarket.

The underpinnings are the current 4Runner, a very capable off-road machine.

Here's a road test I found in Automobile magazine

http://www.automobilemag.com/reviews/suvs/0505_toyota_fj_cruiser/

Motor Trend had a similar article a few months back.

they start around 22K, but i bet you'll have a hard time getting one for that price. seems like the car dealers always add a bunch of stuff you don't need and jack the price up.

i love my Toyota PU, but it came with a clock that added 80 bucks to the price. that wouldn't be so bad but where they put it you need to look around the steering wheel to see it.

In 1999 I purchased a new Subaru Outback.  I bought a Forerunner last year.  Then I tried to put chains on the Forerunner.  The Subaru will stay in the garage for Mammoth trips and driving to WW when the snow is deep.

The underpinnings are the current 4Runner...

Actually they're not. The concept car was, but they based the production more on the landcruiser frame. Go to the Toyota web site and there is a great virtual tour of the vehicle.

After filling the Titan up for 77 bucks, I decided to park it and went down to buy a '05 Kia Sportage. It's used with only 1800 miles on it. Bone stock for commuting only. It gets 27 to 30 mpg and I only paid 12,000 for it. The 1800 miles on the od is not a typo....lol.
They also gave me the 100,000 mile warranty on it.  Not bad for a used car.
