265 HP engine is way too much for the short-wheel base of this vehicle. Way too much torque. When you punch it, the steering wheel jerks a little, because it pulls way too hard too fast. My wife wrecked hers because of this. Would be ok for someone who wasn't a lead foot though. Lots of room in the back seat, and is the perfect vehicle for camping and playing around. Very tall interior. This is NOT a family vehicle. Big Tires are kinda loud, and it does ride a little more stiff than the Pathfinder. "

Its ruggedness, footsteps on the bumpers, tow bar, and lots of room in the back. And, the ease of taking out the back seats in 30 seconds!!"

A Nissan Xterra or a toyota 4runner will last for ever. the 2000-2004's xterras looked cool. 2005 + they now look like crap  ;D Nice interor though  ;)

All these newer vehicles are a pain to change the oil in. Its worth the money to have some one else do it. Just don't take a vehicle in to JiffyLube! You go in for an oil change and leave with a oil change, a new air filter that dosen't really need to be replaced a new hose that is leaking but it didn't leak when it went in. Oh and they didn't screw the oil filter on good.  >:(

Ok back to the topic  ::)

Consumer Reports new customer satisfaction survey for cars is out, as well as their car issue. If you don't have a subscription, try the library. You can also get an online subscription for a bit cheaper than the paper version. I got one several years ago, while I miss a lot because I don't check the site each month for the new issues (my bad), I also don't have to hunt all over the house to find the one issue I need. Nissan didn't do well in customer satisfaction in several categories.

Here's another site I used when I was looking last year. Also if you go to the Yahoo main page, select the Autos link, you'll find some more links for reviews, expert reviews, etc.

Are you looking for a car or truck?

Xterras do not have a short wheel base, i liked it and still do as the frame is from a truck not a car, therefore it is tougher than a typical suv

The engine is not too much for the frame, it is too less.  I have a 2004, the 2005's have a better engine but i do not like the new body style.

This vehicle with off road tires can get thru anything.  I  have never been stuck, in snow, mud or dirt. It pretty heavy and well balanced so it does not tip when taking corners and it does not slide in the snow as the weight is well distributed.  Tires do not wobble on fast take offs, sounds like that lady needed an alignment.

I have all my oil changed at a shop.  My dad did the breaks once and they were a biatch.  I have all work done at shops..

Plenty of room, i have had two kids 5 and 7, two adults and myself with luggage on a road trip and we did just fine.

Iif you are looking for good gas mileage, choose somthing else.  it get's 18 if im lucky but i am a lead foot.  if you get one, i suggest getting the one with the turbo to give you extra hp.  i am going to put an aftermarket air coolling system on mine which should help.  i have bigger tires (not a noise issue) which have taken a bit from the hp and the mileage.

The xterra is not fancy inside, it has all you need and nothing you don't.

If I had it to do over again, I would buy it all over.

One of my favorite winter passtimes (other than hiking) is driving around town and helping to pull people stuck in the snow drift along side of the road or can't make it up their street with my Dodge. I keep tow straps and a gear bag 24-7 in it and it hasn't let me down yet, and haven't found a vehicle I couldn't help.....yet. ::)
Last year I couldn't believe the two wheel drive cars and mini trucks trying to get around town without chains on iced up roads. Several victims where front wheel drives and AWD Subaru's...the most common. I think the key is driving expereience in the snow and slowing down.

If I where to suggest or reccommend a comfortable capable vehicle it would be the Toyota Tacoma or the Toyota FJ40. Not to take anything away from the Jeep Rubicon...it's by far the most capable but maybe not a practicle vehicle for most people.

If I come along, I'll be more than glad to pull anyone out....no charge, I enjoy it.

Here's a Pic from last year taking a break at my buddy's house.

Now that is a neat ride  :o

I agree with AW the new body style isn't all that great.

AW you thought you got bad gas mileage. Look at toolmans ride... what do you get with it? 10? 12? mpg?

Milage isn't a concern for me since it only see's about 5k a year. It's a 1990 with 38k on the clock. As long as it does it's job that's all that matters.

My other truck is a 02'Silverado that gets 20 on the hwy. and just turned 18k. Most  of my miles per year is on two wheels that gets 45 mpg.  ;D

My 03 Dodge 3500 Cummins manual 6 spd trans gets 20 mpg if I am driving it... when my husband drives it he gets up to 24 mpg.  I wonder why that is  :fa-devilwink:  That truck loves to be driven hard... it begs me for more!  Isn't that what we buy trucks for?  To work em?

It is a real good 4X4 too I have the Laramie 4X4 pkg.  That diesel engine & the heavier 4X4 axle adds some weight which helps too.  Limited slip is a GREAT option too.

Our 2005 tacoma double cab short bed 4x4 with Goodyear Wrangler MT/R tires. It gets about 19-20mpg on the highway and it has 62k on it.

Thoes Goodyear Wrangler MT/R tires are great Suv/ truck tires they are alot better than the BFG mud terrain tires. Read the review on themhttp://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires.jsp?tireMake=Goodyear&tireModel=Wrangler+MT%2FR

In the last couple of weeks I have had to buy two full sets of tires, one of the sets was for an AWD vehicle. I bought both sets at Mike's Tires, not only was he cheaper than the TireRack for the same brands, it was much more convenient than having the tires shipped to you and then having to schlep them somewhere to be installed. He was able to order and get the tires the same day and the service at his place was excellent, plus he does not charge for installation, which saves even more money.

Back on topic, my vote goes to Subaru.

I told SD that if he holds onto his FJ until 2027, he might make some big bucks off of it. ;)

There nice... I took a peak at the inside of one in a parking lot a while back and that 3rd windshield wiper is really cool... Only thing I don't like is the white tops.

Toyota is going to over take the ford f-150, Chevy Silverado 1500, and Ram 1500 with there new Tundra. That thing can haul 10,800lbs with the V-8 5.7L engine. Almost as strong at the ford f-250.

Toyota makes a limited edition that is all black Funky G.  You are in!

The only down sides to it I have found are: space, (Xterra is better), blind spot backing up, and I like more front leg room.  But that is only because I have driven full size trucks.  I guess nothing can be perfect.  I am going to install a back up cam.
