Xterras do not have a short wheel base, i liked it and still do as the frame is from a truck not a car, therefore it is tougher than a typical suv
The engine is not too much for the frame, it is too less. I have a 2004, the 2005's have a better engine but i do not like the new body style.
This vehicle with off road tires can get thru anything. I have never been stuck, in snow, mud or dirt. It pretty heavy and well balanced so it does not tip when taking corners and it does not slide in the snow as the weight is well distributed. Tires do not wobble on fast take offs, sounds like that lady needed an alignment.
I have all my oil changed at a shop. My dad did the breaks once and they were a biatch. I have all work done at shops..
Plenty of room, i have had two kids 5 and 7, two adults and myself with luggage on a road trip and we did just fine.
Iif you are looking for good gas mileage, choose somthing else. it get's 18 if im lucky but i am a lead foot. if you get one, i suggest getting the one with the turbo to give you extra hp. i am going to put an aftermarket air coolling system on mine which should help. i have bigger tires (not a noise issue) which have taken a bit from the hp and the mileage.
The xterra is not fancy inside, it has all you need and nothing you don't.
If I had it to do over again, I would buy it all over.
