Coyotes
« on: Feb 07, 03, 11:44:25 AM »
Hi!  Does anyone have any suggestions about discouraging coyotes from coming around my yard?  While beautiful, they seem to be getting more brazen and traveling in pairs or trios, which I have heard makes them more aggressive.  They seem to be very healthy.  Has anyone had problems with them jumping fences, etc?  I have small dogs and there are several small children on our street.  Any suggestions?

Smiley,

Yes, they can and do jump fences.  You need to monitor your small dogs while they are within your fences.  Keep them in at night and listen to the tenor of their barking  at all times.

Since we've built our fence our small dog and cats have felt more secure but we continually monitor their whereabouts and listen for their sounds of alarm.  We have just a 5 foot fence and we felt it would be sufficient but we know of folks with a 6 foot fence that did not prevent bears.  We think it may depend on how close you live to the national forest at the edges of town.

Thank you! :)  We are very careful to always bring them in when we aren't home and to monitor their barking.  We live very close to the edge of the national forest and have seen a lot more since we moved from the middle part of town.  You're right WWRatOut, my dogs are simply coyote buffet!

Being a native Californian, I spell hors d'oeuvres "appetizers"!

Seriously though, we we're sitting on the deck the Sunday of Presidents weekend and saw a coyote non-chalantly stroll right down the middle of Eagle st. at 5:45 pm.  My dogs went nuts and he/she just paused, casually glanced right at us, and then proceeded to cross Pine and go into the yard there.  Great to see one close up, scary that my kids were only about 10 yards away from it, and 20 yards away from us.  There is no way we could have gotten to them before they got hurt if it had decided it wanted Italian for dinner that night.

Just saw one of those critters waltzing down Victorville St. tonight.  It was about 5:15 and the sun was still a-shining.

They seem to be getting more bold as spring approaches.

I wonder why?

Are you feeding them???????

HAY they were here first.  I have never heard of people being hurt by a coyote ( here in Wrightwood).  Dogs and cats they love them.  My wife was almost knocked down by one that came running out of the bushes one night but it just kept on going.  Didnt even look at our dog he jusk kept right on going.  Me, I think that they are wonderful and I love to see them but man can they howl at night.

Unfortunately the coyotes killed my neighbor's dog the Thursday night.  Coyotes went into their backyard and ate their wiener dog.  Terrible shame. :'(

Oh that is sad.  Poor dog, poor family.  I am so afraid of this.  Even though we have a very secure fence, I still will not leave even my rottweiler out at night.  My heart goes out to the family. :'(

No, that wasn't funny.  My 9-lb. wiener dog is the love of my life!

I feel soooooo sorry for Surfer_Dude's neighbors.  How traumatic for them, and for that poor little dog.   :'(

That sounds like something I would say. I have a bad sense of humor some times  ::) I realized it was a joke though.

That's awfully kind of you, okie. Where I come from, there's nothing so serious it can't be numbed a little by even a bad joke, but everyone has their own way of coping with death, and I can't expect my way to be understood by everyone.

I noticed a coyote that is hanging around Lone Pine Canyon that is becoming extremely brave.  I noticed him/her now three days this week on my way home.  I purposely tried to remember his subtle markings. He has been seen in the area of Lone Pine just east of the houses.   Beware of coyotes and watch your dogs and cats, it is the beginning of their season to raise pups.  This is when they are at their bravest.

We watched a nice big coyote walk down Lone Pine about 6:00 this evening.  A leisurely stroll across Lone Pine around the Pinion Mesa area.
