Enjoy the low gas prices while you can since the State of California has a surprise coming Jan 1, and nobody knows how much gas prices will actually increase. 10 cents a gallon?, $1 per gallon? nobody knows since California is "pioneering" this "service" for the rest of the country.

Of course, depending on the rate increase, consumers will begin to curtail gas purchases or switch to alternate fuels.

But wont that cause the amount of gas taxes collected at the pump by the state to go down in the long run?  Probably but dont you worry..  the State has that option covered too...

How would they charge such a mileage based tax? Will some new fancy gizmo or RF tag need to be installed in your cars.. maybe
but they could just record your mileage each time you have your car smogged and calculate the fees right then when you pay for your inspection.

Have an old car that doesnt require smog checks?   Dont worry, if this comes to pass, all vehicles regardless of age will need to be smogged. Cant have those potential gross polluters out on the road not paying their fair share, dont you know.  :P
