Camping near Bishop

What camping areas would you suggest for tent camping and accessible by car with fishing near by. I have visited the Bishop website and several locations were named but I'm not familiar with the area. Thanks for your help.

I like Convict Lake.  It's between Bishop and Mammoth.  Have fun up in that area.  It's one of the nicest places to see...

I suggest Glass Creek area its about 3 miles from the Mammoth turn off and the camping area is free. You have to bring in your own water but its close to everything. June Lake is about 3 miles away. The weather is great.

In the Bishop area proper, there are a number of places to camp.  Some are private...most are public (Forest Service).  Turn left on East Line St in Bishop (first light) and go up the mountain canyon.  There are a number of campgrounds on the way up.  If you go to Lake Sabrina, there are five or six campgrounds with fishing creek access (Bishop Creek).  Bishop creek is stocked once a week.
Intake number two is a popular fishing lake.  Lake Sabrina is well stocked also and you can rent boats.  The entire Bishop Creek Canyon is beautiful with an always running stream running through it.

Great!! Looking forward to it. We normally go to the Sequoia area. Always so nice and cool, with snow still there on a July stay several years ago. Thanks for all the help.

I agree with Wildman... the area he is referencing to is the area I always frequented for recreation when I lived down there.   There is also North Lake & South Lake up in that area.  If you are into renting horses they have a nice place at North Lake to rent them from.  I have always had incredible fishing experiences up in that area.  I really liked fishing the creeks.  Although, last time we were there we found alot of litter around the creeks & some rude folks that would come park their butt right at the nice fishing hole you had... that bummed us out quite a bit for sure!   It is hard for several people to fish the same spot on moving water!  There are a couple nice spots for fly fishing too on the way to South Lake on your right.  This is a beautiful scenic area to take photos too!  I like to camp out up past the road to North Lake.  Although, you cannot go wrong with any of the campgrounds in that area.  If you see Stan the F.S. employee there tell him Micheline from the F.S. said HI for me k? !  : )

To those who know..Is Bishop's Creek the campground about a 1/2  hour out of Bishop--towards the west, up the hill?  On one side it looks like a big desert mountain range and on the camping side, it's lush and green and you walk to the creek...stepping over an old tree/log to get across?
What about The French Camp area? and the campgrounds around there north/west of Bishop?

It sounds like you are referring to Bishop Park Campground, about 15 miles west of Bishop.  Four Jeffery Campground is at the South Lake turn off, before you get to Bishop Park.  Kind of windy there.  Where ever you go up Bishop Canyon you have fishing, hiking, just a great place.  Really good breakfasts at Cardinal Lodge in Aspendell....this will be the first time in about 15 years that my family and I will not be in the Eastern Sierra for Independence Day...Have Fun!

Bishop Creek Campground also has a private pond that they stock once a week with Alpers Trout for folks staying in the campground.  Bishop Creek runs right through it and is stock each week also.   Nice place to stay and fish as the Alpers are always several pounds each.

I can see why it's his favorite spot. I can almost see the trout waiting in the eddy area ;)

Yes, it's a beautiful spot. He was using worms and I crickets....guess who got more fish? me! if you look at the pic, the sort of less rippled waters downstream were where they were...just waiting for the bait to float down.
