John -

I cannot believe you got close enough to a bighorn sheep to take those shots.  They are very skittish animals but you seem to have them tamed.

I was observing and taking photos for about 1/2 hour with the Bighorns fully aware of my presence. Then all of the sudden the rams began a full sprint headed towards me and just went by. When the dust settled I was able to see 2 coyotes charging towards the rams and that's what sacred them - not me!

Here's one of the coyotes that charged the rams.

Not always the most graceful animal.  [smiley=shuffle.gif]

This one is bending over to get a better angle on the vegetation.

Yes - myself and Tim Glenner, another Wrightwood wildlife photographer, have been discussing it.

I wish you luck if you do decide and I hope it does come to fruition as your pictures are certainly book worthy.

Wrightwood, do the coyotes hunt the bighorns? or were they just being a nuisance?  I would think a coyote would have a hard time bringing down a bighorn.  Oh yeah, awesome photos.

It would be unlikely that a couple of coyotes would have any chance of taking down a healthy full grown bighorn. A lamb is potential prey for coyotes, feral dogs, eagles, mountain lions and probably more.

Feral dogs have killed a bighorn in the San Gabriel Mountains in the past.

Beautiful, just beautiful... I love Wrightwood and surrounding.  Stunning pictures like these make me realize here at work in Riverside, sitting in traffic, etc.. I don't wanna live anywhere else.
