Title: Ham radio net
Post by: clint on May 26, 05, 09:42:33 PM
Nope, not the grub grabbers. A new net will be started next Thursday evening at 19:00 This will be a simplex a net. So it will be heard mainly within Wrightwood. It's a chance to make sure your radios are working once a week. We may even have some ARRL news to read. We will start the net on 2 meters and will alternate weeks with 2 meters one week and 220 the next.  So be listening at 19:00 local on June 2nd. at 147.57 with CTCSS of 100.0 even though there won't  be many of us at first, it will be a directed net. Tune in to see how that works.

Okay when you guys sign off with 73, do you mean:

1. My love to you

2. Vague sign of fraternalism

3. Accept my compliments

4. Best regards

5. A friendly word between operators

Also, Clint when is that next class starting up?

I won't be able to make this first net, since I'll be in Wichita KS all week, returning on Friday afternoon.

I'm usually monitoring the TMO repeater to/from work, which is about 0530-0645 weekday mornings, and anywhere from 1700-1900 weekday early evenings (depending on my work schedule)

Have a great net folks, and I'll catch up with you all, when I return!

Peace and 73's

Thanks Sensei for a well run net--great job! I vaguely remember PL-259, but that's about it.

Does KG6ZEV win a prize for his answer? Maybe you should pose the question the week before to give us a chance to research the answers. Kind of like homework.

As far as prizes, could you arrange for me to get a day off (paid) from work? Now that's motivation.

I was going to offer an official Steller's Jay egg shell but we discovered today that the birds eat the shells so he'll need to talk to them about his prize.

Good job Clint - It sounded so official I was afraid to say much as I thought the FCC might be listening.

That OK Matt, Neither will I. Robin had wrist surgery today and I need to take her to work and pick her up tomorrow night. I suggest that all of you who are available still have one. So Susan and John can talk to each other. Because my count says that's it for tomorrow. Matt is at scouts, I am playing nurse (you should see me in white stockings, woo hoo) and Jack is training for something or other.

Ooo, "Et tu Brut'e" Come on now Bob, is that anyway to treat a fellow union member. And besides, the difference is obvious. White and hairy= bare legs. White and silky smooth=stockings. Of course for the most stunning look, you really want fish nets (specifically "industry net") over shimmery tights in a light toast shade. Thats what all the vegas show girls wear. Humph, and people say all those years in theater were wasted.
Title: Re: Ham radio net
Post by: Wrightwood on Jun 16, 05, 03:53:17 PM
I'm not so sure your count is accurate.
KG6ZEQ has not missed a checkin and KF6EZZ might attempt the simplex net with his HT - which has very little output power.

So Susan and John can talk to each other. Because my count says that's it for tomorrow.

I was'nt ignoring ZEQ, I just figured sitting in the room across from each other would'nt be much of a net. And I did'nt know EZZ was going to check in. That's great. I'll send you the link to the ARRL news so you play it.

Well, we had two check in's tonight plus your net control operator. The techie trivia question was: If you put a 1/4 wave antenna on your HT in place of the rubber duck, how many dB of gain to you achieve? It's sort of a trick question. Since the rubber duck is a loss, and gain figures are compared to a 1/4 wave antenna at 0dB the correct answer in none. Even thought you do gain over the duck, you only gain up to zero. Next weeks net will be conducted on 147.57 Mhz with a PL of 100.00.

Tonights quiz question was, what are the elements of a Yagi antenna called?

Susan came closest with Directors and Driven Element.

A Yagi antenna has one element that is "driven" with the feed line attached to it. Counting from the back, this would be the second element. The most rearward element is the Reflector, and all the elements in front of those two are Directors. Now, are the reflector and directors longer or shorter than the driven element?

Title: Re: Ham radio net

Hey Clint,

If we're up there when you put up the Gap let us know, it brings back fond memories. Seriously :drummer:  Ba-dum-dum.

Mike and I started dating in March (not this one, back when) and I remember it because we missed Valantine's Day (hrmmmph). So when Field Day rolled around we participated together with the (then) TRW club. Our assignment: put up a brand new Gap out of the box and run 80m. Oh yeah, we had to put up a tent, too.

AMAZINGLY,  :Smileys: we had not one argument while putting up the tent nor the (pardon me) !$%!#$% Gap antenna. I thought this was a pretty good sign of things to come!!! :ballons:

Sadly, our station was a bust due to 1) bad band conditions, and 2) the 20m CW station next door walking all over us. I won't even mention the balun....

Kerin
(Who's having way too much fun with the smiley's as all my 'boards' are lists and don't use them. I'll get over it eventually....)

Already have the GAP. The Titan DX does not use ground radials. It has an elevated counterpoise at the feed point.  I have some real tree restriction issues so a vertical is the only option. Never been a big fan of the MFJ analyzer since it's not a true SWR meter and won't work at 220. Won't measure power.

There are about 80 hams in Wrightwood. Every morning at 07:00 there is net on Table called the Grug Grabbers. About 4 people from Wrightwood. Now this may not indicate how many people really monitor Table, because the neet is so weird that most (all) of my students don't check into it either. I don't monitor Table because I can't hit from my office in San Dimas. You can't work TMO until your quite a ways out in the basin. It does cover the high desert, in fact much of the way to Las Vegas, quite well.

That's why I'm pushing 220. There is no good 2 meter path from Wrightwood to most of Southern California. There are three or four 220 machines or linked systems that do very well.

And I don't even monitor TMO at home because most of the traffic is just junk I don't want to hear. It's fairly busy machine with about 4 regular users who are on A LOT. BTW the Control op is Bill Woods W6FXJ

<guess we were replying at the same time  :)  had to reinsert this because I logged out while posting>

Percentages sound right for down here as well. Honestly speaking, can't imagine keeping up with a daily net unless it's in the work setting like down here with the defense contractors just so they know what hams are there each day in case of an incident.

Our weekly DCS net dwindled out because we aren't very active anymore and really didn't have anything to say, except "yeah, log me in for 1 hour". It's a real challenge keeping volunteers interested when there's nothing to do.

As for rag chewing, we used to have a great little commuter group on our repeater - very eclectic topics. Some ham stuff, but lots of everyday stuff, kids, remodeling, even recipes (and yes, that was also from some of the guys). It was a great way to keep up with friends, really (oh yeah, and make sure your equipment is in great working order ;)  Now the last couple of years our commuting times have changed so we don't talk, and honestly, don't keep up very well - last thing I think about when I get home is calling folks for no reason. Too bad we lost the group, because it was what used to call the equivalent of Tim Taylor & Wilson talking over the fence on Home Improvement.

Seems like 2m has it's limits anymore as was mentioned above in this thread. A little coincidence in that the 147.57 frequency was what was used in El Segundo where I grew up since Marconi was a  boy, but was pretty unusable by the late 1990s due to either interference from Mexico or (and what really griped me) other hams who would not let go of their rag chewing on the frequency for our weekly DCS drill . This was pretty much the inspiration for going after a 440 freq when that band was reorganized. Guess these rag chewers didn't read the part about why amateurs get any band width at all by the FCC, but then I'm a child of the Kennedy generation and think you should volunteer to do something, no matter how small.

Too bad you don't use 440 up there, we really like it down here and so are 440 rich equipment-wise. Who knows, maybe I'll get lucky at the W6TRW raffle next weekend   :2thumbsup:

Hope everyone had a nice weekend,
Kerin

So when we are on 2 meters we love to talk to you. I anticipate using 220 for disaster communications here so you might look into a  new toy on that band.

I am/was a VE, for both ARRL and GLAARD (Greater LA...)

But, when I moved here this past summer, I dropped out of the AVARC (Lancaster) Radio club, and let my ARRL membership expire.

So, I Guess that means I'm no longer a VE

Net tonight on 222.12  (100.0)

Might be a few minutes late. Have to do telemetry first.

You could avoid that if you had the proper foil hat.

There will not be a net next week as there is a Fire Safe Council bored meeting in conflict.

Knowing you're involvement, I'm sure you weren't taking a shot at the meetings.  Perhaps you meant board?   ;D

Just as I suspected, it was not a mistake. Clint really does not enjoy the scintillating conversations at our meetings. :'(

Are we out of sync on the frequencys? Isn't tonight a 220 night? If not, should I assume 2 weeks from tonight will be the next 2m night?

(I would have PMed you this question, but apparently, I'm "blocked" from sending PMs to you)

Bob,

I don't accept PMs from anyone. It's not you. You are correct, I put us out of sync. But our last net was on 220 and I thought you might like to check in tonight so I restarted us on 2 meters.

So what is the net on tomorrow night? I should have the equipment to listen to either one by tomorrow. I don't think I will let Clint play with my new tri-band radio, since he won't let me do telemetry with him. ;)

Net tonight on 222.12 simplex with a CTCSS tone of 100.0

You better be there Bob! And Susan and I are doing Telemetry after the net. You are welcome to join us. We'll pick you up at about 7:30. In fact if you want to buy your chaming wife dinner, we could do Mexico Lindo afterward.

I'm in on the telemetry, but you still can't play with my tri-band radio. ;) Can you do Mexico Lindo before the net and telemetry? If you can, we would be in on that also, if you can't that is way too late to eat for my bride.

Hey Clint!

At the WAD you said you had a short list of local agency freqs that we should consider monitoring.  Will you please post that list or send it to me via e-mail?

Thanks!

73s and all that good stuff.

It would be neat to post the short list.

I've been traveling a lot, and working insane schedules most of this summer, so I haven't been able to fire up my radio lately.

Are ya'll still doing periodic 2M nets, or do I need to go out and buy a 220/440 rig?

Thanks Pete - I'll mark the dates on my calendar.

I miss the old General Dynamics swap meet in Cucamonga - It was getting similar to the TRW swap meet (just a  lot smaller)

yeah, those dates are for 2005. i'd call before going, just to make sure they still have them. HAM radio is kind of a dieing hobby.

the GD swap meet was really good. years ago i used to sell every month at all the local ham swaps, but they got to be kind of taken over by computer stuff. i haven't even gone to one for about 3 years, they may sell chinese toys by now.

Ham radio a dieing hobby? That's funny. New licenses are at an all time high. New technologies like IRLP, PSK-31, ECHO Link, and APRS are generating interest in a whole new group of high tech hams that want to play around in digital modes. There is even a whole new category of didgital voice radio called D-Star.
And thanks to CERT trainings all over southern California people are getting a better understanding of Amateur Radios role in disaster communications.

It's time to get the simplex net rejuvinated. We are going to move it to Monday nights instead of Thursday. Traffic Thursday evenings just makes it too hard to get home on time.  We will try to have one the monday after Thanksgiving. 19:00 hrs on 222.12 simplex with a PL of 100.0

I will be working a scipt for a standard format and will expect folks to take turns at being net control. Since we play the ARRL audio news in a very low taech manner (mic keyed near your computer speaker) I hope most folks will be able to take a turn.

Oh, that's right, I'm not a HAM yet.   :-\

Hiking with Toolman and finding out that he has radio contact even while down in the canyons where we hike in the Cabin Flat area, even using the Table Mountain repeater (Blue Ridge Repeater was down at the time) gives me added incentive...

Sorry Robert, my 1950s vintage 220 rig only runs AM.  Believe it or not, I tried FM in the 1950s and only found one ham who could properly demodulate the mode.  He had a super-regenerative detector on his tunable IF.
