Tips on Planting Roses
« on: Jun 14, 08, 11:11:19 PM »
I have 3 rose bushes I am going to plant but wanted to get some tips as I have never planted before.  They already have flowers on them.  I have the B1 to put in and planting soil, any tips appreciated.

Thanks.

How did the planting go?  The only rose that survived my planting is a wild yellow rose.  I am going to plant a Mister Lincoln.  You might ask the Grizzly Cafe for maintenance tips, they have beautiful roses.  The Sunset Western Garden Book is full of info.

I am planting them tomorrow evening.  They are doing well in the spot where they will do.

Thanks for answering this!

I was told by the girl at Established Roots to dig a HUGE hole, fill it with water let it go down, fill it with water a 2nd time and let it go down.

Get some newspaper, put in the bottom of the whole.

Put the plant in, fill with planting soil, water with B1 in the water and then water each day and keep it well watered.

In 1 week, fertilize it.

Just don't get the leaves wet when you water. They turn white and shrivel up. Only water from the bottom.

We have found that horse manure is the best fertilizer. A friend of mine told us to try it, and it has worked better then I could ever imagine.  Roses also love water, mine like to be soaked a couple days a week. My roses are blooming now (finally), but still recouping from the Memorial weekend snow.  Gook Luck AW!

May I ask what the newspaper is for?  I have never done this before and am planting some more roses this weekend.

Also - did she mention how far to bury the bud union?  I was told 1" to 2" for this area.

Thanks.

do not bury the bud union!  make sure it is sticking out of the soil!  this is where potential new canes will grow from and they cannot do that if the union is buried!  cover roots with dirt right up to the graft, but do not cover the graft itself.  You only want to cover the graft possibly in the winter to protect it during a freeze, but even that's not necessary here in WW.

The newspaper is to help keep the water around the root ball, instead of just percolating through the soil.  Since our soil is basically decomposed granite, it doesn't hold water well at all.  The newspaper will eventually disintegrate, but by then the roots should be well established.

This is also good to do when planting trees, or any other large plant.
