Thanks for the specifics....

This moderate quake should be a wake up call to get our ducks in a row.

I need to replenish our disater supplies/survival kit.  Anyone else guilty of robbing from their supplies as the years pass by.... Or not rotating expired product...?

I'm part of a very active committee working on the "Wrightwood Cooperative Emergency Operation Plan". This small committee consists of emergency operation representatives from both LA & SB Counties portions of Wrightwood. (Including representatives from Supervisor Antonovich and Supervisor Mitzelfelt offices).

The biggest concern expressed by all members of this committee is that not enough people in this community have sufficient quantities of water stored for their families and pets.

5.25 gallons of water per person - per day is needed for basic needs.
That's 73 gallons per person for 14 days.

During a major quake the water service in this community will be completely down for an extended period of time. What water might be available will be needed for fire fighting due to the number of anticipated structure fires.

Every household should be properly storing enough water for at least 7-10 days. You can get by with a shortage of food but you can't fake your way through a shortage of water.

I am wondering how do I store more than 100 gallons of water. Obviously I am not prepared!

Seriously, how does one store this much water?

Wow, I just saw John on KCAL 9 News.  They were doing a special on being prepared for the next earthquake and there's good ole John being interviewed and if I may say so, 'being an excellent representative of Wrightwood.'

Looking good young man.

Hopefully there's not a quake in the winter and the drums have frozen!

Brian I'd rather have frozen water than NO water   ;)
Seriously.. I have never tried to empty the drums in winter as I dump and refill the drums in spring. Rarely is there long enough cold spells that it could possibly freeze solid a 30 or 50 gallon drum of water. Plus having them next to a building also helps.

I've been meaning to get one of those blue 55 gal drums for water storage seen during KCAL 9's interview with John.

It's only around $43.00.  After the accessories such as Preserver Concentrate, Syphon Pump, Tamper Seal Caps and a Bung Wrench it comes in around $77.00.  But the shipping is $56.00!  Ouch.

Anyone know if this item is available semi-locally and can be picked up in person?
