Mountain Bking
« on: Jan 12, 09, 05:20:25 PM »
Many many years ago as a kid we used to hike up to the top of the slide area, starting from the top of Cedar. It took a few hours but we got to the top just fine and one time we spent the night. I was looking at maps and I see part of Acorn up there and also it looks like NF3N06 road from Hwy 2 ( Insperation Point) leads to the top of that slide area. Is this passable on some mountain bikes? Any animals to be looking or cautioned about? About how far from Hwy 2 can one walk in about 3-4 hours time?

Thanks

I don't have my maps handy, but I've taken the mountain bike from Inspiration Point at Highway 2 up the dirt road to where it meets the top of the Acorn Trail.  It's dirt road all the way, so passable by most mountain bikes - just have good brakes for the ride back down!  In some places the Pacific Crest Trail runs parallel, the bikes have to stay off the trail and on the dirt road.  The dirt road goes through some of the Mountain High runs.  I don't know whether than means you aren't allowed to ride through in the winter - or that you're allowed but have to go through the snow and watch for skiers/snowboarders!   ;D

Somehow I didn't read your question exactly right this morning.  The dirt road continues a little further past the Acorn trail intersection then it dead ends at sort of a clearing.  I don't know where the slide is in relation to that part of the dirt road, though.

About how long of a ride is it, time wise?

I did that ride several times last summer.  The slide is about 1-2 miles before the road ends at the PCT.  Nice ride although watch out for occasional yahooers going to fast in jeeps/trucks.  Time it takes from inspiration pt. varies a lot with fitness level but at least 45 minutes to 1 1/2 hrs depending.  Send me a message in the summer if you want some company on the ride.
