Ham Communications during the Sheep Fire Incident
« on: Oct 05, 09, 04:29:38 PM »
A very big public THANK YOU to:

John-KG6ZEP
Cindy-KG6ZEQ
Clint-KB6CLA
Phil-KG6ZXW
Miles-KF6KAU
Ed-KI6EYE
Bonnie-KI6EYD

and countless others during this incident.  We had better, more accurate, and more timely information about this fire over the Table Mountain repeater than we did over the various news outlets.

Doubtless we have lots to learn from this crisis.  I know that my family does, and I know we will have much to discuss during CERT classes and conversations around town.

I have a radio in my truck, and an HT in my wifes' car. We kept informed and connected to the rest of the community, in a time where we were concerned not only for ourselves, but our friends, our neighbors and our town.

I can only imagine the confusion and concern I would have had, if I didn't have Amateur Radio to keep me informed.

I'm convinced that Amateur Radio helped in this crisis, and I'm very glad that I am an operator.

I could not agree more. I would also like to thank everyone for the efforts and inspiration to become a HAM.

I am going to bet that there will be a few new HAM classes starting in the near future. Many people I encountered at Helicopter Hill on Saturday night and then around town on Saturday were glued to me just to listen in on the Table Mountain 2 repeater. I had WW residents who were out of town calling me for info because they could not get accurate information from any of the news outlets out of the area.

Miles was the trainer for my class and I would like to thank him personally. Miles you were very gracious for helping us and I appreciate it.

Thanks again everyone!  :2thumbsup:

This incident put my wife one step closer in wanting to get her license.

I was up late last night listening to the radio, so I was late getting up this morning. The first thing she said to me was, "Turn on your ham radio. I want to know what's happening in WW."  It seems someone has refused to give her the security code until she is licensed.  ;D

Agreed, thanks everyone.  I listened to the Table Mountain machine and learned a lot about what was going on.

I am in the process of setting up a Technician Class in Wrightwood.

It won't be until Oct 31 at the earliest.  Class can be one 8 hr day or two 4 hr sessions or other combinations.

I have done weekday evenings also.

Test sessions can be arranged for the group in Wrightwood.

If you have ever been "on the fence" about getting a Ham licence, this incident should be the one to help you make the decision.

There are ham operators in our community from age 12 (maybe younger) to age 80.  It's a 35 question multiple choice test.  A good starter Handi-Talkie (or HT) can be had new for around $100.00.  Used equipment is out there as well.

Miles is a great person, and a wonderful teacher.  This will be time and money well spent.
