Anyone been up Baden-Powell yet this year? How's the snow on the trails:
From Vincent Gap?
Dawson Saddle?
Islip Saddle?

I've got a group from work who wanted to make the trek this weekend, but they're chickening out. :-)

The last word I got was that there is still a lot of snow on Baden-Powell.  So much so that some of the PCT hikers are using Angeles Crest Hwy as an alternate route to Islip Saddle, at which the detour around the Station Fire Closure begins.

Aargh! The worst snake hike I ever had was a couple of years ago on PCT above Grassy Hollow. I swear, I thought I'd been transported into a horror film.

I've seen several there, too.
When they're in the way, I've had good luck throwing very small rocks at their tails. It seems to irritate them just enough so that they crawl away.

The Rattlesnake program at Grassy Hollow this past Saturday was great.  Joe Baneshek really knows his stuff.  He had on display approximately a dozen live rattlesnakes of different species.

Unfortunately, our area of the Angeles National Forest hosts the most venimous Rattlesnake in the country.  We don't have the Western Diamondback up here, we have the Southern Pacific Rattlesnake up here.

The problem if you get bit is, the antivenom doesn't work very well, if at all, with this species.  He also said you definately want to get to Loma Linda if you've been bit by a Rattlesnake.  They are the experts when it comes to Rattlesnake bites. They also have the most antivenom, whereas many hospitals don't have any at all and have to end up sending you there.  Time is crucial and he talked of an individual who died because of the time delay of getting to Loma Linda from another hospital.

There have been several reported Rattlesnake bites on the trail to the Big Horn mine.  Be aware and careful out there.  The wet winter has produced a bumper crop of rodents and critters, thus the Rattlesnake population is up as well.

I was thinking of joining Nolena for the evening hike but with snakes I'm a no go. And don't tell me that they'll be asleep. :)

They could not make it to Mile Marker 4 and not sure how the PCT hikers did it!  A lot of snow..so much that it all of a sudden, the trail stopped.

Hiked to the summit. Snow is all gone off the trail. I saw NO snakes, and I hiked 9am to 2pm.
