Access to Acorn Trail

About five years ago we encountered a problem with a resident on Acorn Rd. regarding entering the trailhead for acorn trail.  Since then we have respectfully parked at the bottom of the road near the camp and hiked up the road, which hasn't completely eliminated the encounters.  However, the other day my daughter dropped us off at the top of the road and we were horribly harassed, although we were there less than two minutes.  I'm aware that this is a privately maintained road, but were we breaking the law by driving up it and turning right around?  Perhaps so--I'm not sure.  Instead  I'm hoping that there is another access to this trail.  I'm all for avoiding stress when setting off on a peaceful hike, and not invading other's privacy if warranted.

Some people need to just kick back and relax around here.  People going out on a hike aren't out to hurt anyone (except themselves when the cramps set in halfway up the trail ).

Thanks for the tip about the Linnet St. trail.  My husband and I love to hike but will never go near that woman on Acorn again.  I have never heard such profanity in my life.  She is a horrid woman.  I hope her Karma bites her good one day.

Drove by the nice ladys house to wish her a good day and guess what, there's a FOR SALE sign in front of her house. She didn't curse me out, probably thought I was a prospective buyer...!! ;

We used to use Acorn as a final test for new drivers at the fire department.  More then once our friend at the top would come out and curse us as the young firefighter jockeyed to 3 point the fire truck around. 

More then once, I parked right in front of her house in the squad and walked up to see the lower waterfall.  She would have a cow and I would just smile and tell her to have a nice day.   

It alway struck me as odd that someone who lived alone at the end of a very lonely street might present herself in such a obnoxious way.   What is really apparent is that is one sad and lonely person.

Forestry should make an access road and a small parking area up there for people who buy adventure passes and post no loitering signs in the parking area(maybe a webcam )

It's private property and should not be confused as being Forest Service land. After you're about 1/3 of the way up the trail it becomes the San Bernardino National Forest and is administered by the Angeles National Forest.

is it just me or is there something wrong, when a popular trail is only accessable by going accross private property?

I have lived here, in Wrightwood, for 24 years and have driven up to the top of Acorn many times. I read the sign "Private Road" but have never really thought much about it. Yesterday my husband and some friends that were visiting took a drive all around town and drove up to the top of Acorn. They were told by one of the residents near the top that this is a private road and people should not be driving up this road. He was very rude and had a few choice words to say. Can anyone clarify if this is actually a "Private Road" or is it just that someone decided to put up the sign to keep people away. I have always thought of it as a non maintained road, but not private. Thanks.

It is a private road, but that person was rude, and probably not the owner of the road.

Acorn is a non maintained road...the County does not repair it nor plow in the winter.  Very similar to hundreds of thousands of us who live in the unincorporated areas of San Bernardino County.  We pay the same taxes but get no road maintenance.  When rain comes and washes out our dirt roads, we rent a tractor and fix them.  If it snows three feet, we either chain up all for wheels or stay at home till it melts.  I guess that means that my dirt road is "private" as well.  Each property along Acorn gives up a portion of their property so that the road can pass through and folks can use it....just like we do. The sign is there to keep you out.  Is it enforceable?  Never seen it enforced in forty years( other then rude and obnoxious folks who vocalize) nor can I imagine the SBSD taking a unit out of service to come up and investigate a "trespassing" complaint. I can only imagine what the Pacific Crest trail hikers have had to endure over the years.  Would I park my car at the top and go hiking?  Nope.

Sort of ditto. The maps show the back road behind my property.. is technically my property. It was there when we bought this place. Ok, I knew that. I just don't want any liability for it. cheryl o7o

Well I am assuming that resident wasn't too happy when the AC100 went passed their house either. I have hiked Acorn Trail a few times and ave  never been harassed.
