Yes, of course. I always use a firewall.

SpeedRacer: i wanted complete control over SSID and other features, and i wanted dual band. I'm using the Netgear R7000: http://www.netgear.com/home/products/networking/wifi-routers/R7000.aspx

We are weekenders, and yesterday we got to our property and saw yellow markers and spray paint on our property. Is this related to the 1G Fiber? Will they need to cut through our property? It was just weird.

Might be.. When DigAlert is called.. all the utilities come out to mark their stuff.
No idea if we need to cut through your property without knowing the details.. but we work in the public right of way.

I noticed a somewhat disappointing new schedule on the wrightwood.net site.

I'm sure it's consistent with what Wes said about SCE approving poles at a rate of 150/month.

I know that we can't please everyone. But I would rather go a bit long on this while I work to make it shorter.

I completely understand, and I'm sure you'd be hanging fiber off the poles like crazy if Edison/JPA would grant permission in a timely manner.

It just stings a little.  The house I was renting is in Section 1.  The house I bought in February is in Section 5.

I guess that year in section 3 should be 2017 - otherwise I would have to complain - where is my fiber??   :-)

Hmmm. This presents a problem. My family moved to Wrightwood at the beginning of September and I figured the timing was perfect for this new fiber. We don't have any internet because frontier isn't accepting any new customers, satellite is a non starter and our phones get terrible internet reception. It's been like time warp back to 1992  ;) I'm not really sure what to do. I'm in section 4 and with no date at all, that's pretty discouraging.

This works for us especially if our DSL goes down or we are traveling....  we dont have smart phones.

I'm not recommending this specific item, it's an example:

https://www.amazon.com/zBoost-Antenna-Booster-CDMA-GPRS/dp/B00LZX65T6/ref=sr_1_13/156-8913837-4995807?ie=UTF8&qid=1476753229&sr=8-13&keywords=cell+phone+range+booster

Your carrier may be able to provide something like this, or at least tell you the specifications.

These work by putting an antenna "in the clear" above your house, and the booster (usually) inside.

That makes your phones work, (and your phones' internet) better.

You may think you're suffering without Frontier's DSL, but it is truly dismal.

When we finish section 2 I will update with a better date for section 4. We are working hard to combine some items together..

These are some great ideas thanks. I understand the challenges of creating and then somehow sticking to timelines when you have limited control over multiple aspects of a project Wes. It is what it is. I'm glad it's coming eventually. I wont begrudge the effort you and your team are extending. I just need to figure out an additional 4 months at least of stop gap. Caught me off guard a little.

We don't have any internet because frontier isn't accepting any new customers, satellite is a non starter and our phones get terrible internet reception.
It's also worth calling back and checking with Frontier from time to time.

When I was moving, the first call said "no" and I argued that they weren't adding service, that they were moving service.  They said they'd check with engineering and call back.

Three days later when there was no response, I called again and the agent said "of course we can always accommodate an exising customer, but the central office is not closed" -- meaning they could add customers no problem.

Now, the performance is competitive with satellite, just to set your expectations.  Satellite  might be slightly better.  Watch out for things like 2 year commitments.

That and folks in section 1 will be dropping service as they switch.

Just saying that it might be possible.

I got 850mbps wired and in the 80's to high 20's wireless. I'm pretty happy!

Excede is faster, 12 Mbps but it's capped.. that's the problem. Watching a couple of movies burns through the cap in no time and you're done.. a bad 2 year commitment in my opinion. DSL you can get month to month and at least it is something..

Ping times are mucho better also with wired.. around 6 or 7 milliseconds. If you're a gamer, you sure want that advantage.
