I mean to be fair telecom is notorious for terrible support so you don't have to do much to compare favorably but your guys are setting a pretty high bar.
I think what you're seeing is the difference between a Telecom Company and a Service Provider.

I'm glad your brought this up. The telco's (including cable companies), act like bully monopolies in each area. The telcos and cable companies have tried hard to eliminate all competition but it's a new world, there is a shift in technology and we are taking advantage of it. I have been waiting for years for Fiber to be affordable an mature enough for UIA to implement. I could go on and on with the benefits of the Fiber from a technical point of view and a management point of view.  It's expensive but boy does it just work!

I was as dissatisfied and frustrated as anyone that that lives up here can understand. My poor wife has had to deal with many a rant at the absolute incompetence, bad attitude and poor service of the Telco in town. Wrightwood is a great town and deserves much better then what it has been getting. I just kept waiting and listening to all the rumors and lies from them that they were going to "fiber the town". About 3 years ago I got tired of waiting.

Now finally, I get to put money where my mouth is/was!

All of our support staff are here in the States, (in Ontario at our HQ). In fact UIA is lucky enough to have six Wrightwood residents on staff.

I firmly believe that one can have great support and treat everyone with dignity and common sense and still make a buck. We have been doing just that for almost 21 years now.

It's a lot of fun being able to put up 1 Gig Fiber straight to the home in the town I live in..

Regards,

--Wes

I feel your pain.  I've never seen a wired connection as bad as my cheezy Frontier DSL.

I probably feel it more than you and KW because in February I lived just on the other side of Acorn, in section 1.

I could have kept renting and have fiber TODAY.  No, I had to buy a house.  I couldn't wait for the section map to be published.

I moved about 1/3rd of a mile, from the first section to the last.

I figure that it's a choice between getting very upset (and having my doctor talk to me about blood pressure) or I can try to find humor.

Well the wait is finally over. The UIA guys just finished a first class professional installation. They showed up on time, planned the best placement and cabling runs and did a very clean install. Far exceeding my expectations. The UIA "Dynamic Duo" of Curtis and Robert are true professionals.

Folks, if you are patiently (or not so patiently) waiting, please know that the wait will have been worth it.

Wes, (I know you'll be reading this) your guys did a great job both providing a great customer experience and representing your UIA team. It's great doing business with a company that actually cares about its customers and the services it provides.

Thank you, thank you, thank you!

Mornin'. Can someone tell me if UIA is internet exclusively? I keep hearing smatterings of "fios" & the like. I stopped in to their office last week to see if my"hood" (zone) was up & running. I forgot to ask about the "fios" thing. Haven't been to town yet to see if anyone is in the office on a Saturday. Anyone in the know? Thanks

Fios is/was Verzion's brand name for Fiber Optics. UIA is fiber optics. Zone 3 here can't wait... REALLY can't wait... It just took 10 minutes to post this. Has Frontier for all intents and purposes abandoned Wrightwood/PH/Phelan? Last night went to 3 stores in Phelan. None of them could get an internet connection to run my credit card.

As mentioned, FIOS is Verizon's "brand" for converged services delivered over Fiber.  AT&T calls theirs "U-Verse."

I've not seen a FIOS installation, but I was a U-Verse customer.

The idea is that it's converged services: Phone, TV and Internet.

UIA isn't doing TV.  They're doing landline phone, but I haven't had a landline more than six years.

When I moved to Wrightwood, I also dropped cable/satellite TV.

I've got a Roku box.  There are at least three alternatives that do the same thing -- TV streamed over the internet.

I like it a lot.  I pay less than $20/month for streaming with Netflix and Amazon.  I can get most of the cable offerings through SlingTV if I want it for $40-ish.  I watch the KABC news for free through NewsON (most of the time, sometimes Frontier just isn't good enough).

The problem with bandwidth is that we're constantly doing things that demand more and more.  Frontier needs to spend money to bring more bandwidth to this area, and they're not doing it.

UIA is bringing fiber all the way to your house.  It's going to be a long time before he has to upgrade the fiber.  Good stuff.

I signed up for SlingTV and get it over my AppleTV box. I've had an AppleTV box for quite a while so had to upgrade to the latest one for $149 in order to get Sling to work.
I chose the middle package for $25. per month and I have to say it works well. Everything loads fast and just seems to work. The agreement is month to month for Sling. Pretty inexpensive way to watch TV.

Unfortunately, my sport (when it's on TV) is on either NBCSN or ESPN3 -- as I remember, they're in different SlingTV packages.

.... and you can't get TSN in the U.S., generally.

Yeah the streaming services have come a long way. Unfortunately the cable providers that loose the most from us streaming exclusively also provide a large part of the internet service we're using to do said streaming. Deep pockets the telecoms have. In a lot of regions in the US the big boys have tried tactics ranging from limited data caps on home internet to throttling of streaming services that haven't appropriately lined the pockets of the telecoms. It has been brought up in congress and there have been some hopeful signs in that realm but so few people are paying attention that I fear the "campaign contributions" will soon outweigh taxpayer sentiment in regard to our power to choose streaming services over cable/satellite. That's one of the main reasons we need to support companies like UIA. When companies like Verizon/Frontier are allowed to be the only game in town, we as consumers suffer. When I lived in an area that had multiple ISPs, I could pit them against each other in a sense. They had a vested interest in providing better service or a better price or both in order to keep me as a customer. Try calling Frontier and threatening to leave if they don't improve your service. You know how that would go.

Correct me if Im wrong but I think "take it or leave it" attitude with internet and TV broadcast is due to the fact those services arent considered as "essential service" and therefore they are not as tightly regulated as gas, electricity and water.
