A search party in the Lake Arrowhead area has begun looking for Dawson Hartwig, son of San Bernardino County Fire Chief Mark Hartwig, on Saturday, Jan. 28, after Dawson went on a hike by himself and did not return.
"We got a map set now we're transposing it to hand it out to folks," said Battalion Chief Larry Lavogue.
Mark Hartwig, who spoke with The Press-Enterprise by phone Saturday, said his son and a couple friends had traveled to the area to enjoy the recent snow on Friday.
At some point Friday, Dawson had gone for a walk by himself on Burnt Mill Road, his father said.
"He never came back from his walk," he said.
He said Dawson is 20 years old and between 6 feet, 4 inches and 6 feet, 5 inches tall.
Hartwig said that he was working closely with the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department to learn what he could about the missing boy.
He asked that anyone who might see his son in the area call 911.
Pierce Marquez and his father Mario came to the Lake Arrowhead area from Ontario to "help however we can," Mario said.
Pierce's girlfriend, Samantha, is Dawson's sister.
The search is beginning in the Lake Arrowhead Village shopping center, starting at Burnt Mill, Battalion Chief Lavogue said. A Cal Fire helicopter is assisting, circling the skies above downtown Lake Arrowhead.
More than 100 fire and law enforcement personnel are involved in the search.
