Many people I know have noted that the Squirrel population lately appears to be primarily juvenile members of the species. Very few adults. All of the adults that visited the area I live in, Spruce, Lark, Robin Circle etc. that came daily for their nuts and berries, are gone. The nests are not being used. Many would let me know when they arrived. They could come when I called them. I love the Squirrels. Does anyone know what's happening to them?
I've read all the postings online about them, how the mites killed so many years ago, then there were reports of finding a couple with the plague a few years ago, how they were spared from bringing the red squirrels here, etc. I've watched them be killed by speeding cars, carried up Acorn in the mouths of Coyotes, and know that some are poisoned, but this is a very small percentage of the population I've been living with. I also know there are population fluxes, but this is scary and very sad. I'm in my 7th year of interacting w/them on this property and this is heartbreaking.
One person who grew up here said she doubted there would be any squirrels next year.
I used to see Coyotes all the time here on the property, running up Lark, and Acorn, but I haven't seen one Coyote in at least 2-3 months. The Ravens who have a nest in a tree just a few ft from my house, appear to be gone as well. They may have simply moved on to areas w/better pickin's a a result of the fires, but they've been using this next for at least 7-10 years.
I know that Band-Tailed Pigeons are dying from avian trichomoniasis. I've seen two pigeons die this horrible death, but it is specific to that species.
Can anyone help us understand what's happening? Thanks. Sagespirit
