Do Mom and Dad take turns in the Jay world, or is Mom left to care for the eggs herself? -

You can pretty much go by the amount of sexual dimorphism as to how the duties are shared--or not.  Sexual dimorphism is the sexes looking the same or different.  (di-two, morph-form) The more sexual dimorphism, the less the male is likely to spend time caring for the birds, the more the two sexes look alike, the more they seem to share the duties.  With Stellar jays being so similiar, it is a fair bet, they share most of the duties.  As with most rules--I'm sure someone could come up with exceptions.  There are always phalaropes where the females are polyandrous (they mate with lots of different males) are the more colorful, and the drab colored males do all the incubation and care of the young!

Sure wish I'd known this before I got married! :)

Nothing yet! I was just watching and momma left for a split second and there are still 4 eggs in the nest.

Mom's out shopping right now....

Just the four eggs sitting there, waiting for her to come home.

I'm in Northern California right now and it's so fun to be able to watch from so far away!!!  I have my own family watching this little family.  I'm so excited, can't wait for the new arrivals!!

Mom is still just sitting there - I think it would be neat if the babies appear on Memorial Day!  How does Mom tell when something is happening - I guess she can feel that something is moving beneath her?  Maybe all of a sudden she gets poked in her tummy by a tiny beak?

Okay maybe the saying should be a watched egg never hatches instead of a watched kettle never boils. So everyone stop watching and you can review the tape after they hatch. ;D

When should we start to worry ???

I wonder if the 14-16 days include holidays and weekends?

Well there you go, if it is 14-16 business days, then we won't have to worry for a few more days.

The 14 - 16 days would begin from the time the 4th egg was laid, so I'm guessing possibly today but probably tomorrow.

Thanx, kew - that makes me feel a little better.  I just checked the cam and mom was gone, and the eggs still look intact.  I've even gotten half the people I work with tuned into this bird!

I thought I've been seeing cracks for a few days but I don't think it was.
