That nest is lookin' pretty crammed already!

And it's gonna get a whole lot more cramped in there...

LONG before anyone does any fledging outta there!

The babies will begin to flex their wings and stand up on the edge of the nest when they get close. They will also venture out on the beam, the nest is built on, if they do as the previous clutch did.

Here's a thought I had today: I wonder if the parents know how many eggs will be laid and that determines the size of the nest. The four babies are still a few days off from leaving the nest and the nest is so full I can't imagine a fifth baby would fit!

We saved the nest from the previous clutch of 5. It will be interesting to measure both and see if the nest, for a clutch of 4, is any smaller than a nest for a clutch of 5.

Here's what it looked like when the birds were within a day or two of leaving the nest on 6-15-01:

I have found some interesting sites while researching jays. I found that 93% of Stellar's Jays lay 4 eggs. One site that followed 8 clutches had only 3 clutches that had at least one fledgling survive to fly off on their own. I wonder if we are lucky not to have such a high mortality rate. There was also a site that I believe was affiliated with Cornell that had other live nesting cams including an owl cam.

The babies for the first time have started flapping their wings this morning so it's getting close!

Cool photos, Wrightwood!  Thanx for sharing.  I wish I could have seen the babies flap their wings this morning.  I need to win the lottery - my job is just getting in the way of waaaaaay too many other things I would rather be doing!
