Using Radio Scanners in Wrightwood
« on: Dec 29, 02, 11:23:04 PM »
Radio Scanner activity in Wrightwood during the past 6 months has never been more active, at any time..

The increase in Wrightwood radio traffic is due in part by the Wild Fires of 2002 and now the first few weeks of natural snowfall.

Anyone interested in learning more about scanning of emergency radio broadcasts in Wrightwood (and surrounding areas) should follow this topic.

I know plenty of people out there listen to scanners and will pass on all the needed information.

You'll become one of the people - that really knows why the helicopters are circling the sky.

::) Geez, I wonder were you got this idea to start this topic?

Thanks, I'll be watching it closely as I'm considering purchasing a scanner and have no idea were to start. Right now, all I have is a little cheep radio shack CB that plugs into a car cigarette lighter which is really worthless up here, not to mention having to go sit out in the truck just to see if I can pick something up really bites. :P

That sounds really interesting.  Where do you buy a scanner and how much are they?

I love to know what's going on in town....

I'd appreciate any info....

Thanks,

Angel

Angelwolf,
Radio Shack has scanners $299.99 + antenna $59.99.
Don't know what all else would be needed tho.
Check the one in Phelan. Circuit City in V'Ville would probably also have scanners.

Let me see if I can sum up what Clint is trying to say:

If you buy a scanner, cheap or expensive, don't count on getting "All"  or "Any specific" frequencies that are being listed in this topic.

Wrightwood is a very unique area for using scanners. Certain frequencies can only be picked up in some areas of town.

I've taken my good scanner to the west part of town, connected it to a friends antenna identical to mine and was not able to pick up the frequencies that I receive at my house.

Better scanners and antennas will help but are not a guarantee by any means.
No matter what scanner you get chances are high that you'll receive plenty of broadcasts in Wrightwood.

If you think about it, not much different than listening to your car radio in Wrightwood. Some areas of town they work and some they don't.

Great thread. Is there anything special I should know about getting a scanner that will pick up railroad communications? Are they going to the more sophisticated systems or will they stay with what I can pick up with an inexpensive scanner? I don't really care about listening to police or fire calls.

Also, some places have rules about using scanners in a car. Is this legal in CA?

So a handheld scanner would be OK even in a car. That's cool. Thanks!

Because they state "Shortwave" the ordinance has no teeth. Scanners do not receive "shortwave"  frequencies so this would be be almost impossible to prosecute.
