That's the story.
My condolences to the family who lost their beloved animals. I know how I would have felt.

Panic - no.
Caution - yes.
This notification was only meant to keep us all safe.
We live in a forest, next to a wilderness.
It's their home that we have moved into.
Let's just be cautious and smart.
This is a beautiful, wonderful wilderness, and a great place to live.

I really am sorry for the alpacas, but mountain lions are magnificent. And I still think coyotes are pretty even though they've accounted for a couple of my cats over the years. I miss my cats terribly... but it's hardly the coyotes' fault.

My daughter spotted the mountain lion on acorn.
He was walking in the middle of the road and the only thing that made him run into the woods was her car horn.
Be very very careful!
Our friends called animal control.
The lion is extremely large and on the prowl.

Let me clarify...

If you have a sighting of a Mtn Lion headed into the forest there is no reason to call. If the lion is suspected of killing livestock (alpacas) then calling CA DFG is appropriate.

why would you call animal control? by the time they (or anyone for that matter) responds... the lion is gone. Its wasting their time.

Where on Acorn ? It's a long street. Was it past the camp ??

Apparently there is a mountain lion around locally.
This happens every year.
The word to the wise is, "Watch your children and pets, especially at night, dawn, and dusk."
Cougars can easily jump high fences.
Call Fish and Game if you see one that seems to be a threat.
There are always mountain lions in the wilderness. They live here. There is no need to notify anyone about mountain lions in the wilderness, as opposed to mountain lions exhibiting threatening behavior in a residential neighborhood.
Mountain lions are seen in Wrightwood every year. And they can get into yards and carry off pets.
Caution - yes.
Panic - no.
This is life in the natural forest.

Mountain Lion sighting was repoted on Swallow Hill and Flume Canyon Roads on 5-16-2011 at approx. 6:00pm. Several people witnessed the lion moving from Swarthout wash south up Flume Canyon road and disapearing into the forest. This is near the water company land on the Los Angeles side of the village. Please be aware of your surroundings if hiking in the forest. It is very unusual to see a Mountain Lion in the day time especially prancing up the middle of a road broad daylight within the village.

Thank you for letting us know so that we can be properly prepared. I have lived here since 1980 and I have never seen a mountain lion in person. My young adult children have had the feeling of being watched before while they were hiking. I hadn't heard about the animal until the end of May when it was sighted near Acorn. I wish that I had known that every year they are seen on Wrightwood's streets, especially while we were raising our children.

My daughter encountered a mountain lion on that JPL trail, which is the paved road many use across Mtn. High. It was about 3/4 mile in, around 2:30 p.m. yesterday. It was walking down a hillside just as she turned a bend in the road, she had a stare down with it. She said after about 30 seconds, it slowly turned away and she did too....walked back to the car and came and got me. Our walk was done!!

Mt. Lions are far more dangerous than Black Bears, unless it's a mama and her cubs. A protective mama could be very dangerous.

They are both beautiful animals and you're in pretty good shape if you don't turn your back on them.

I agree. If you come upon a bear it is usually by surprise and they will run off. An encounter with a Mtn. Lion probably means it was stalking or following you, they are hard to take by surprise.
