Wish I was in the Sierras right now. Here are a couple more pics of the quail we have here at our place. Maybe these will help identify them.

With all of those scales, I would definitely say California Quail.

Any second opinions out there?

I still can't tell from looking at the books. Could go either way.

They are California Quail. I Googled them and mine are definitely California Quail....not Gambrel. Thanks for pointing that out.

And Chuck, you would be surprised at how many times I have picked the camera up for a quick snap only to find the lens cap on!

On the way home from Idyllwild, I stopped at Lake Fulmor and saw this boy sitting on this huge rock.

The Moon the other night was very eerie with some clouds moving in front.

I am in the process of cleaning off my hard drives (10.5 months of special projects) and found this from Captain John Paulik's Memorial Service. As always, Josh helped me out with the graphics and planning. I am most proud of the fact that he is wearing my old badge. I had to get another one when they brought me in from pasture. We're standing in front of the brand new Engine 101.....both of us served at Station 101 as our first assignment.

Yeah, I'm proud of both Amy and Josh. They were raised here and went through
school with their friends from K-12. Still remember them bundled up in snow suit with little backpacks walking to school in the snow (before we closed school for snow). Wrightwood has been good to our family.

This silhouette is in honor of the fact that tomorrow is the start of Dove season. We have quite a few that eat the spilled grain and use the pond for water. Every evening, they roost in one of the dead trees around the property. My dove hunting friends drool.

This question may have been addressed before, but with 16 pages of info to scroll through, it's a little hard to find.

It looks like you're using a 30D, but what lenses do you have?
Specifically the zoom or telephoto you use for those spectacular closeups?

I use a 30D and am already coveting the 40D. I have a 28-135mm and a 100-400mm Canon. Both are image stabilized. I would still like to get a real wide angle lens.

This is a shot of a hummingbird's shadow. Not as elusive as capturing their soul but gave me a start when I first looked at it.

Yeah; I got the email from Canon regarding the 40D last week. Looks pretty appealing.

Are you using the 100-400 for most of the bird shots?

I use the 28-135mm for some of the birds that allow me to get close but 90% of the animal shots are with the 100-400mm.
